\"\"<\/a>State Rep. Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, is informing close friends and supporters tonight in an e-mail that he is running for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by Steve Pearce<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Cervantes plans to make his formal announcement at a party that will be held Monday evening in Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n

Cervantes joins state Rep. Jose Campos<\/a> of Santa Rosa<\/st1:city>, Al Kissling<\/a> of Las Cruces<\/st1:city>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley<\/a>, Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> businessman Frank McKinnon and former Lea County Commissioner Harry Teague in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

On the Republican side, only GOP restaurant-chain owner and rancher Ed Tinsley has formally entered the race, but former Bernalillo County GOP Executive Director Bob Cornelius<\/a> has formed an exploratory committee \u201cwith the intent to run.\u201d Sierra County Republican Party Chair C. Earl Greer<\/a> and Aubrey L. Dunn Jr. are expected to make final decisions soon, and others are also considering the race.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Cervantes will be joined at Monday\u2019s party by a number of high-profile Democrats, and will be endorsed by House Majority Leader Ken Martinez<\/a>, state Reps. Al Park<\/a> of Albuquerque and Peter Wirth<\/a> of Santa Fe, and former state Rep. J. Paul Taylor of Mesilla.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Roswell GOP businessman Phelps Anderson, meanwhile, announced today that he won\u2019t run for the seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much consideration, I have decided not to seek election to the Second Congressional District office for New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>. Family and business obligations must come first in 2008,\u201d Anderson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> said in a prepared statement. \u201cI believe the Republican Party will field a strong and able candidate from the district to continue the long tradition of leadership and service to the citizens of the New Mexico<\/st1:State><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n
