{"id":2511,"date":"2007-11-08T18:35:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-09T00:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/dems-seeking-federal-seats-tout-endorsements\/"},"modified":"2007-11-08T18:35:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-09T00:35:00","slug":"dems-seeking-federal-seats-tout-endorsements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/dems-seeking-federal-seats-tout-endorsements\/","title":{"rendered":"Dems seeking federal seats tout endorsements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOq5Fy4ZAI\/AAAAAAAAD-M\/Ap8llSn0T1Q\/s1600-h\/Chavez,+Martin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOq5Fy4ZAI\/AAAAAAAAD-M\/Ap8llSn0T1Q\/s200\/Chavez,+Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130632298289980418\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In the midst of other candidates entering or considering entering the federal races, Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chavezforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> are announcing new endorsements and reminding people about previously announced backers of their campaigns.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ch\u00e1vez, facing a likely U.S. Senate primary against Democratic Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, announced on Wednesday the endorsements of state Treasurer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">James Lewis<\/a> and former Govs. Jerry Apodaca and Toney Anaya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley, a Second Congressional District candidate who has been running since April but has seen three high-profile Democrats enter the race in the last month, announced today the endorsements of Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Dolores Salda\u00f1a-Caviness, Eddy County Commissioner Tony Hernandez and Carlsbad City Councilmen Manny Anaya and Jeff Diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOpSFy4Y_I\/AAAAAAAAD-E\/5KcWaasf2ds\/s1600-h\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOpSFy4Y_I\/AAAAAAAAD-E\/5KcWaasf2ds\/s200\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130630528763454450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Heinrich, a First Congressional District candidate who is facing three other Democrats in a primary, announced today the endorsement of the Pueblo of Zia, the first pueblo to endorse any candidate in the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich and McCamley, who were both in the race months before U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> announced his retirement and started the free-for-all that has led to so many candidates seeking federal offices, have both been trying to shore up support. Heinrich recounted some of previous endorsements in today\u2019s news release, including three <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> city councilors and seven state legislators. And McCamley recounted his previous endorsements from three state legislators, one member of the Public Regulation Commission and a union council that represents more than 7,000 <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOpR1y4Y-I\/AAAAAAAAD98\/xyRsA1Lyqi8\/s1600-h\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzOpR1y4Y-I\/AAAAAAAAD98\/xyRsA1Lyqi8\/s200\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130630524468487138\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Zia Pueblo Gov. Rudy Shije said Heinrich \u201chas proven he is an effective advocate on tribal issues. \u2026 We know he\u2019ll be a congressman who understands the unique concerns of the pueblo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">About McCamley, Caviness said she has \u201cseen how hard\u201d her fellow commissioner works for his constituents, and said he \u201ccares about getting results that matter to help improve the lives of everyone in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.\u201d Hernandez said he believes McCamley will be a \u201cgreat representative,\u201d and Diamond said McCamley has \u201cexactly the kind of energy and drive that we need to bring real change to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lewis said Ch\u00e1vez is \u201cthe right candidate to get <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region> out of the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> war, and he won\u2019t be afraid to reverse the damaging Bush policies that continue to hurt our country.\u201d Apodaca said Ch\u00e1vez \u201chas demonstrated his strong leadership and administrative skills as mayor of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. \u2026 I am confident Ch\u00e1vez will translate these same leadership qualities to the U.S. Senate.\u201d And Anaya called him \u201ca native son who understands the issues that are unique to our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">New poll used to promote Udall candidacy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, a new poll commissioned by the progressive national Democratic Web site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2007\/11\/8\/114745\/968\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Kos<\/a> confirms an earlier poll that found Udall stronger than Ch\u00e1vez against potential Republican opponents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll found <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> beating Ch\u00e1vez by three points and Pearce beating him by one point. Meanwhile, it found Udall beating both Pearce and Wilson by 17 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll of 600 likely voters was conducted by Research 2000 between Nov. 5 and 7 and has a margin of error of 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A poll conducted in October by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReportEmail.aspx?g=0c284bce-cac2-4c56-88c2-3f35c6b617bf\" target=\"_blank\">SurveyUSA<\/a> found Ch\u00e1vez losing to Pearce by 21 points and to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> by 4 points. It had Udall beating both by 18 points. A second <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReportEmail.aspx?g=207c667a-0838-4211-867f-6843c87ee5cc\" target=\"_blank\">SurveyUSA poll<\/a> released this week had Ch\u00e1vez beating Pearce by five points and beating <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> by four points. It didn\u2019t consider the probable Udall candidacy, because it was conducted before Udall announced he was reconsidering running for Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s poll numbers aren\u2019t consistent in any of the three surveys, the Daily Kos poll is the second to indicate that Udall is, at this point, stronger than Ch\u00e1vez against the two GOP candidates. And both polls had Udall in essentially the same position \u2013 up 17 or 18 points on both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cRun, Udall, run!\u201d wrote Markos Moulitsas Z\u00faniga, who runs Daily Kos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">McCamley gets some attention<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley is gaining some attention by utilizing YouTube for his campaign. This week he posted video of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J-kvu3pYrYo\" target=\"_blank\">Saturday speech<\/a> at the Democratic Party\u2019s state central committee meeting and his first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d-Sjb9Y8WUc&amp;eurl=http:\/\/www.democracyfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">video diary<\/a> from the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley was well-received at the party meeting. He sought to set himself apart from the other candidates in the race by saying, \u201cI\u2019m not just running for Congress. I\u2019ve been running for Congress since April 7 of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also took a shot at Pearce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSteve Pearce decided he was scared of me, he decided he was going to run for Senate, thought it would be an easier race,\u201d McCamley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley\u2019s speech and the videos impressed two <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> bloggers whose sites are well-read by New Mexico Democrats. Barbara Wold, who runs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracyfornewmexico.com\/democracy_for_new_mexico\/2007\/11\/nm-02-congressi.html\" target=\"_blank\">Democracy for New Mexico<\/a>, wrote that McCamley\u2019s \u201crousing speech\u201d was \u201cone of the highlights\u201d of the Saturday meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt was clear that McCamley\u2019s message \u2013 and all the high energy he\u2019s putting into this race \u2013 come from the heart, from real concern about what\u2019s going on in our nation, from a dedication to making genuine change happen by putting it all on the line up close and personal,\u201d she wrote. \u201c\u2026 Many candidates like to talk about \u2018grassroot campaigning\u2019 but this guy really walks the walk (and drives the drive).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She was referring to McCamley\u2019s statement that he has driven more than 30,000 miles and visited every county in the Second Congressional District since entering the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And the blogger behind <a href=\"http:\/\/nmfbihop.com\/showDiary.do?diaryId=444\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico FBIHOP<\/a> wrote that McCamley, on Saturday, \u201cwas funny, personable and stood up for his convictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have to say\u2026 these two videos have really opened my eyes,\u201d the blogger wrote. \u201cMcCamley is a great public speaker and works the crowd well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here is the video of his speech:<\/p>\n<p><object height=\"355\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/J-kvu3pYrYo&amp;rel=1\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/J-kvu3pYrYo&amp;rel=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" height=\"355\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And the campaign diary video:<\/p>\n<p><object height=\"355\" width=\"420\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/d-Sjb9Y8WUc&amp;rel=1\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/d-Sjb9Y8WUc&amp;rel=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" height=\"355\" width=\"420\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">When I write about McCamley I often refer to a previously published disclosure that reveals our friendship.
