I\u2019ve been a county commissioner, and I am currently a mayor and a state representative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzH4sh_pbcI\/AAAAAAAAD9c\/Y8T_Du6XbGk\/s1600-h\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzH4sh_pbcI\/AAAAAAAAD9c\/Y8T_Du6XbGk\/s200\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130154894474964418\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Tinsley made his announcement in a news release this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI understand what makes our district so near and dear in the hearts of Southern New Mexicans,\u201d Tinsley said, \u201cfrom the oil and gas fields of the southeast, to the tourism and hospitality industry of the mountains, to Las Cruces \u2013 one of the fastest-growing cities in the southwest, to the rich farming lands in the lower Rio Grande Valley, to our forest lands throughout the district, and ranching. I would consider it an honor to represent every corner of this district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Their announcements add to the news about the congressional race that is planned for this week. <st1:placename st=\"on\">Former<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Lea<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype> Commissioner Harry Teague, a Democrat who has already confirmed his run, will formally announce it Thursday at 5 p.m. in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. And state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, is expected to enter the race in the coming days. He has confirmed only that his decision has been made and that he would announce it \u201cimmediately\u201d following Tuesday\u2019s municipal election in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve been unable to reach Cervantes this week for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the Democratic side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> businessman and former teacher Frank McKinnon are also running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No other Republican has formally entered the race, but former Bernalillo County GOP Executive Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imbackingbob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Cornelius<\/a> announced Saturday that has formed an exploratory committee \u201cwith the intent\u201d to run. Sierra County Republican Party Chair <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlgreer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C. Earl Greer<\/a> and Aubrey L. Dunn Jr. are expected to make final decisions soon, and others are also considering the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> says he has experience to lead<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:city>, who has been a lawmaker for four years and <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Rosa<\/st1:city>\u2019s mayor for almost 10, vowed as a congressman \u201cto continue to support local governments and small businesses to keep <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> moving forward.\u201d He said his goals include developing \u201ca strong local and national economy to produce the jobs of tomorrow,\u201d to create a \u201cfair playing field\u201d for the nation\u2019s agriculture industry to compete with foreign farmers, and to promote the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> as a \u201cworld leader in renewable energy and energy-efficient products and clean water and air quality products for worldwide exportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he\u2019s been in business for 23 years. He said he has \u201cthe proven capability to improve the quality of life for our citizens by supporting local governments and business opportunities, and the potential to lead this country to be strong economically, militarily, environmentally and education-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI know firsthand what it takes to run a successful small business on <st1:street st=\"on\"><st1:address st=\"on\">Main Street<\/st1:address><\/st1:street>, providing jobs and contributing to the quality of life in a community,\u201d he said. \u201cA good congressman must not just have read about it, but must have experienced the struggle to create employment and turn a profit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As a <st1:placename st=\"on\">Guadalupe<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> commissioner, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he helped develop a new financial mechanism to ensure the county could better care for its roads. He said he also pushed, successfully, for the computerization of county government and helped implement policies and procedures for the transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As mayor, he took credit for helping create a city that is more \u201ccustomer-oriented, business-friendly and attuned and accountable to our citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe have new parks, new and expanded recreation programs for youth, adults and seniors, a new downtown plaza, new roads, new water and water reuse infrastructure, new water supplies, a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">new city<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> hall, and coming soon, a new convention center and a new museum,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat was only 10 years ago a slowly dying town is now a model community for economic development, as recognized by the N.M. Economic Development Department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> also cited several legislative accomplishments of which he is proud, including his co-sponsorship of the bill that created a board that helped save Cannon Air Force Base. He also cited his sponsorship of a bill that created the state\u2019s Renewable Energy Transmission Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tinsley says he knows how to get things done in D.C.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley said his experience as the former chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restaurant.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Restaurant Association<\/a> \u2013 he owns the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kbobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">K-Bob\u2019s<\/a> chain of restaurants \u2013 gave him \u201cunparalleled experience in sitting down at the negotiating table with lawmakers to make sure the voices of my constituents were heard, from the small business owner to the working mother in our restaurants.\u201d He plans a formal announcement for Nov. 19, but did not provide details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley has been involved with the association for 10 years but became more active after he lost to Pearce in the 2002 primary. That experience was the focus of his news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c(The restaurant association) experience was extremely rewarding as I became close friends with restaurant operators across the country who are living proof that the American dream is alive and well, but not without challenges,\u201d Tinsley said. \u201cIt helped me understand more about what it takes to get things done in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state>, or sometimes how to keep things from getting done in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. I did learn that if you are not at the table in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, you will soon be on their menu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley\u2019s wife Meredith said Tinsley believes that, after losing in 2002, \u201cwhen one door closed, another one opened with the leadership role for the National Restaurant Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMaybe it was luck, fate or God\u2019s plan, but I feel now it was just what he needed to gain experience on how to get things done in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d she said. \u201cI know how much our ranch means to Ed, how much his family means to him, and also how important the issues of southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and our country are to him. It is hard to think about loaning him out to do this, but I know his passion and love for the process, his deep understanding of the diversity of issues in our district as he lives them each day in our own businesses, and I know he will make a great congressman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The two live on and operate a cattle ranch north of Capitan in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Lincoln<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. The ranch has been in the Tinsley family for 50 years, and Ed and Meredith Tinsley have owned it for 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the criticisms Tinsley faced in 2002, and is already facing in this campaign, is over the fact that he owns a home in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Many accuse him of spending most of his time living there, but Tinsley said it isn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley said he owns a second home and headquarters his restaurant business in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in part because of the restaurant-industry talent that exists there. He lives in a community with a golf course because he wanted to have access to such recreation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But he said he has filed his tax returns and voted in Lincoln County for the last eight to 10 years and most of his business interests \u2013 in ranching, wildlife and gaming, oil and gas, commercial real estate and a development being built on the ranch \u2013 are headquartered at the ranch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he has spent 60 percent of the last 120 days at the ranch, 20 percent in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> and 20 percent traveling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley said his campaign platform will include immigration reform and border security, health care, small-business and family tax relief and the safety of Americans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Rep.
