She has served on both the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission and the New Mexico-Sonora Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am encouraged that the Health Department will be headed by a practicing physician with an impressive record of public service,\u201d Martinez said in a news release. \u201cAs a pediatrician, Dr. Torres knows first-hand the health needs of New Mexico\u2019s children and families. Her input will be extremely valuable as I work to develop effective and practical public health policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Torres has also served on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Do\u00f1a Ana County Detention Center and chaired the New Mexico Border Health Advisory Committee. She earned her bachelors and medical degrees from the University of New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a privilege to be asked to serve as the governor\u2019s health secretary,\u201d Torres said. \u201cI look forward to applying the real-world experience I have gained working with New Mexico children and families to the administration of the Department of Health and the development of public policy in order to keep the people of our state healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
