{"id":2469,"date":"2007-11-05T09:23:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-05T15:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/field-of-second-district-hopefuls-and-potentials-grows\/"},"modified":"2007-11-05T09:23:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-05T15:23:00","slug":"field-of-second-district-hopefuls-and-potentials-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/field-of-second-district-hopefuls-and-potentials-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"Field of second district hopefuls and potentials grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The race to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> in the Second Congressional District got much more complicated over the weekend with a number of people entering the race or announcing that they\u2019re seriously considering it.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, at least one candidate plans to enter the race later today. Here\u2019s the quick rundown:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imbackingbob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Cornelius<\/a> announced Saturday that has formed an exploratory committee \u201cwith the intent\u201d to run. The native of Tatum recently moved back there from <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where he was a former executive director of the Bernalillo County GOP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=185&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Campos<\/a>, D-Santa Rosa, surprised many by announcing at Saturday\u2019s meeting of the party\u2019s state central committee that he\u2019s seriously considering running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, also gave a speech at the meeting, but made clear that he had not previously announced he was running and was not doing so at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Clint Chandler, a Republican who works in the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> field office of U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, confirmed that he\u2019s seriously considering running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Republican Ed Tinsley, a restaurant-chain owner and rancher, is expected to announce today that he\u2019s running for the seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> businessman and former teacher Frank McKinnon is also running, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roswell-record.com\/main.asp?FromHome=1&amp;TypeID=1&amp;ArticleID=17890&amp;SectionID=49&amp;SubSectionID=112\" target=\"_blank\">Roswell Daily Record<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">GOP gets some candidates<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Jx_pbBI\/AAAAAAAAD6E\/zj8f67tJcrA\/s1600-h\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Jx_pbBI\/AAAAAAAAD6E\/zj8f67tJcrA\/s200\/Tinsley,+Ed.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129378042265299986\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Before Tinsley and Cornelius jumped into the race, no GOP candidate had formally done so, and, technically, neither is formally running, yet. But Cornelius didn\u2019t move back to Tatum to consider and then decide against a run. And, though Tinsley has not formally made his announcement, he informed a number of supporters over the weekend that he\u2019s decided to run. He plans to speak with me and other media outlets today to provide details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley will have some big backers: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restaurant.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Restaurant Association<\/a> has pushed him to enter the race. Tinsley owns the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kbobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">K-Bob\u2019s<\/a> chain of restaurants and, after he lost to Pearce in the 2002 primary, he became heavily involved in the influential group, serving last year as the chairman of its board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His biggest weakness is that he owns a home in <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city>, in addition to his ranch in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Lincoln<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, and he\u2019s already being attacked as an outsider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry81-B_pa9I\/AAAAAAAAD5k\/v3RIIyEO3h0\/s1600-h\/Cornelius,+Bob.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry81-B_pa9I\/AAAAAAAAD5k\/v3RIIyEO3h0\/s200\/Cornelius,+Bob.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129377840401837010\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Cornelius, 27, said he\u2019ll be traveling throughout the district in the next few weeks and will make a formal decision during the week of Thanksgiving. Realizing he could face similar criticism, having lived recently outside the district in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, Cornelius is emphasizing his Tatum roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhen the party needed me to serve, I left home to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to represent the party, its platform and its candidates to the best of my ability,\u201d Cornelius said. \u201cNow, I feel I have been called to serve my party, my state and my country in a different capacity and that is by coming home (to Tatum) and becoming a candidate for the United States Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also praised Pearce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCongressman Steve Pearce has served his constituents well over the years, and I wish him the best as he seeks to become our next United States Senator,\u201d he said. \u201cSteve worked hard to bring in new jobs, fight the state\u2019s debilitating meth problem and to support our farmers, ranchers and the oil industry. I promise to commit myself to these issues and build upon the successes Steve brought to the district. He and I share the same values.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said the amount of money he\u2019ll need to raise to compete with candidates like Tinsley, who will help finance his own campaign, doesn\u2019t concern him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Chandler<\/st1:city> was in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> last week to meet with party officials about a potential run. He said he has \u201cdeep roots\u201d in the Second Congressional District, \u201cas I am a <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> resident, a Deming native, and my family operates a ranch near to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hillsboro<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile I hope to arrive at a decision soon, I am carefully considering the choice and will continue to perform due diligence on the matter,\u201d he said. \u201cMy discussions with grassroots activists and elected officials have thus far have been very encouraging, and I have cause to be optimistic about fundraising. My conversations in D.C. were productive and very positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Chandler<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has worked in a number of capacities for Domenici over the years and also authored a fiscal-policy paper for former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole\u2019s presidential campaign. Before Domenici announced that he would not seek re-election, plans were in place for <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Chandler<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> to join his re-election team next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Another Republican who is actively considering the race and expected to make a decision soon is Sierra County Republican Party Chair <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlgreer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C. Earl Greer<\/a>. Others considering it or being mentioned as possible candidates include Phelps Anderson, who, like Tinsley, ran unsuccessfully against Pearce in the 2002 primary; state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=184&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Don Bratton<\/a> of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>; Roswell Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Mike Kakuska; and former Roswell Mayor Bill Owen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Democratic primary gets crowded<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Gh_pa_I\/AAAAAAAAD50\/myvXDKfWVUU\/s1600-h\/Campos,+Jose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Gh_pa_I\/AAAAAAAAD50\/myvXDKfWVUU\/s200\/Campos,+Jose.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129377986430725106\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>On the Democratic side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> and former Lea County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/former-lea-county-commissioner-to-run.html\">Harry Teague<\/a> are running, and Cervantes is expected to announce as soon as late this week that he\u2019s running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before news of a potential <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> candidacy broke on Saturday, most believed Cervantes would be the only serious Hispanic candidate in the race. If <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> gets in, there will be two and, even worse for Cervantes, they are both known as Joe and their last names start with the same letter. That could make things interesting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Gx_pbAI\/AAAAAAAAD58\/u0RZUqvaJuE\/s1600-h\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ry82Gx_pbAI\/AAAAAAAAD58\/u0RZUqvaJuE\/s200\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129377990725692418\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Cervantes is more widely known than <st1:city st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:city> in the Second Congressional District, but a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> campaign would certainly take some support from Cervantes in what is expected to be a hotly contested primary, thereby boosting, at least to some degree, the campaigns of McCamley and Teague.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We\u2019ll soon know what <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> decides. If he enters the race, there will be four heavyweights in the race in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, Cervantes, McCamley and Teague.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And McKinnon decided last week to run, the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> newspaper reported. His platform includes a focus on alternative energy, including wind and solar. He\u2019s opposed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_Nuclear_Energy_Partnership\" target=\"_blank\">Global Nuclear Energy Partnership<\/a> that Domenici has been so instrumental in pushing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">A free-for-all<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The news of the potential candidacies of <st1:city st=\"on\">Campos<\/st1:city>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Chandler<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and Cornelius and the candidacy of McKinnon have all come in the last three days and surprised many who were beginning to think the field of candidates was fairly close to being set. But the Domenici dominoes continue to fall. Who knows when they\u2019ll stop?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley said he\u2019ll make his announcement Wednesday, not today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 12 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve also neglected to report that Aubrey L. Dunn Jr. is considering entering the GOP primary.
