\"\"<\/a>If there was any doubt left, State Rep. Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, has essentially confirmed that he\u2019s running for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He made comments that essentially indicate he\u2019s running Wednesday on The Morning Show with Alan Riehl<\/a>. You can listen to the podcast of the interview by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking all the steps we need to do,\u201d Cervantes said. \u201cWe are moving in the direction of putting\u2026 a team in place that can win that race.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The fact that Cervantes is running is something that we pretty much knew, and I reported earlier this week<\/a>. Though he didn\u2019t flat-out say he\u2019s running on the radio show, Cervantes said he is \u201cmoving in the right direction\u201d but still had some phone calls to make and wants to be joined by friends when he makes the final decision.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

But Cervantes confirmed to me earlier this week that the final decision had been made and would be announced after Tuesday\u2019s Las Cruces Municipal Election<\/a>. He said he was waiting until after the election because voters are currently focused on the municipal candidates.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

So here\u2019s the reality: Cervantes is running for Congress, but it\u2019s not official yet. He wants to save the celebration for his formal announcement. He wants to personally talk to some people he hopes will support him before he confirms he\u2019s running. He has not, in the most literal, attorney-minded sense, said he\u2019s running, but his statements and actions, taken as a whole, indicate that he is running.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what Cervantes\u2019 wife Jennifer said when Riehl asked if she supports him running next year:<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely. I do believe it is the right time for Joseph. Not only is he an exceptional candidate but I think he\u2019d make an exceptional congressman,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2026 He knows the family supports him 100 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And Cervantes spoke like a candidate on the radio show. Asked how he would stay in touch with the district if elected, he said this:<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope to be very accessible. I hope to be home every week, here in Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Asked about a platform, he spoke about fixing the \u201chealth-care crisis\u201d and trying to \u201crestore the place of our nation in the world stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And he spoke about being a bridge-builder.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had a number of Republican legislators telling me they\u2019re going to support me,\u201d he said, though he didn\u2019t name names. \u201cWe need to elect people that are not going to be divisive.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

There you have it. Expect a formal announcement from Cervantes sometime after Tuesday\u2019s municipal election. Though he won\u2019t speak as an official candidate at Saturday\u2019s meeting of the state Democratic Party\u2019s Central Committee, expect him to tell people at that meeting that he\u2019s running.<\/p>\n

The other Democrats who are running are Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley<\/a> and former Lea County Commissioner Harry Teague<\/a>. A number of Republicans are considering the race, but none have entered it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
