{"id":24542,"date":"2010-12-21T15:34:55","date_gmt":"2010-12-21T22:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=24542"},"modified":"2010-12-22T07:41:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T14:41:49","slug":"martinez-picks-florida-reformer-to-be-education-secretary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/martinez-picks-florida-reformer-to-be-education-secretary\/","title":{"rendered":"Martinez picks Florida reformer to be education secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_24555\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24555 \" title=\"Skandera, Hanna\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Skandera-Hanna1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanna Skandera<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gov.-elect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martineztransition.com\">Susana Martinez<\/a> has nominated a woman who implemented education reforms in Florida to be New Mexico\u2019s public education secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Hanna Skandera \u201cserved as the deputy commissioner of education under (Florida) Governor Jeb Bush, where she promoted and implemented middle and high school reforms that instituted greater accountability, incentives for high performance and the end of social promotion,\u201d a news release from Martinez\u2019s transition team states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result of the education reforms put in place in Florida, reading scores improved dramatically across ethnic groups, with Hispanic students outperforming all students in 31 other states,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n<p>Skandera has also served as a senior policy advisor for the U.S. Department of Education and undersecretary for education for the State of California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHanna is a proven reformer who has successfully implemented education innovations and achievement-based reforms for two of our nation\u2019s governors,\u201d Martinez said in a news release. \u201cShe shares my belief that we must focus on implementing reforms that improve student achievement here in New Mexico, rather than simply throwing more money at a failed system.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Skandera said Martinez has directed her \u201cto reform a system that has failed young New Mexicans, and we will do so by raising standards, rewarding excellence and re-focusing our attention on classroom achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe foundation for these bold changes is an approach to education that puts students first,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 3:45 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Martinez\u2019s team sent this statement from Bush:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHanna is a passionate, effective advocate for improving student achievement. Her vast academic, government and professional experience in education makes her an incredible asset to New Mexico as they work to improve student outcomes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Update, 4:15 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinknewmexico.org\/\">Think New Mexico\u2019s<\/a> Fred Nathan was quick to praise the selection of Skandera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Elect Susana Martinez deserves an A+ for choosing Hanna Skandera as PED secretary,\u201d he said. \u201cSkandera is a\u00a0true education reformer\u00a0and a data-driven proponent of smaller schools.
