{"id":24456,"date":"2010-12-19T11:41:27","date_gmt":"2010-12-19T18:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=24456"},"modified":"2010-12-19T11:41:27","modified_gmt":"2010-12-19T18:41:27","slug":"martinez-nominates-padilla-to-be-tax-and-rev-secretary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/martinez-nominates-padilla-to-be-tax-and-rev-secretary\/","title":{"rendered":"Martinez nominates Padilla to be tax and rev secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Gov.-elect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martineztransition.com\">Susana Martinez<\/a> on Friday nominated former state treasurer candidate Demesia Padilla to be her administration\u2019s taxation and revenue secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla, a certified public accountant, is currently chairwoman of the Bernalillo County Audit Committee. Since 2007, she has served as a commissioner on the New Mexico Gaming Control Board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemesia is a proven expert in the administration of the state\u2019s tax code, and I\u2019m confident that she would oversee a taxation and revenue office that would provide quality customer service to New Mexico taxpayers,\u201d Martinez said in a news release. \u201cTogether, she and I will promote reforms to our tax code to make it more understandable, business friendly and fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez added that one of Padilla\u2019s top priorities, as the secretary overseeing the Motor Vehicle Division, will be to push for legislation that would \u201cprohibit the issuance of driver\u2019s licenses to illegal immigrants and to revoke those licenses that have already been issued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Padilla said she accepts the challenge \u201cto ensure that the people of New Mexico are served by a taxation and revenue department that is transparent, fair and efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will be my charge, and I intend to deliver on it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla ran unsuccessfully against Democrat James B.
