{"id":24447,"date":"2010-12-17T17:07:21","date_gmt":"2010-12-18T00:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=24447"},"modified":"2010-12-17T17:28:43","modified_gmt":"2010-12-18T00:28:43","slug":"two-defendants-in-sos-case-charged-with-tax-evasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/two-defendants-in-sos-case-charged-with-tax-evasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Two defendants in Vigil-Giron case charged with tax evasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Two defendants already charged in state court with bilking taxpayers out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/08\/prosecutors-allege-the-theft-of-millions-of-dollars\/\">millions of dollars<\/a> were indicted this week on federal tax evasion charges.<\/p>\n<p>The federal indictments of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/Lobby\/940531.HTM\">Joseph Kupfer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/Lobby\/070154.HTM\">Elizabeth \u201cDaisy\u201d Kupfer<\/a> were announced late this afternoon by the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>From the news release:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three-count indictment alleges that Mr. and Mrs. Kupfer unlawfully failed to report at least $768,333 in taxable income during the years 2004 through 2006, thus evading $286,175 in taxes due and owing to the United States. If convicted of the charges in the indictment, Mr. and Mrs. Kupfer each face up to five-years imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kupfers are scheduled to be arraigned in Albuquerque on Dec. 28 at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>They are already facing state charges, along with former Secretary of State\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebecca_Vigil-Giron\">Rebecca Vigil-Giron<\/a> and media consultant Armando Gutierrez, accusing them of stealing millions of dollars from the Secretary of State\u2019s Office between 2004 and 2006 by falsifying invoices related to Gutierrez\u2019s contract with the office. Each faces 50 state felony counts including money laundering, fraud, soliciting or receiving kickbacks and tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p>All defendants have pleaded not guilty in that case. Trial had been scheduled for January but was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/vigil-giron-trial-delayed-again\/\">recently delayed<\/a>.
