\"\"<\/a>It\u2019s crunch time, and the first Democratic presidential candidate debate of the home stretch \u2013 the final weeks before the primary contests begin \u2013 will be held tonight. For Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a>, it\u2019s a chance to stand out while the frontrunners, Hillary Clinton<\/a> and Barack Obama<\/a>, bombard voters in Iowa<\/st1:state> and New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> with advertising. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The official Democratic National Committee<\/a> debate will be broadcast on MSNBC<\/a> beginning at 7 p.m. MST.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Richardson<\/st1:city> will begin running a new television advertisement in Iowa<\/st1:state> today that will air in tandem with an ad about his rescue of American hostages from Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> that I wrote about last week<\/a>. The new ad appears to be the culmination of the brilliant ad campaign Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s firm has put together \u2013 some ads poking fun at the governor, others highlighting his experience.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The new ad attempts to be an intimate, honest look at the governor and a plea for support. It makes vague references to the mistakes he\u2019s made on the campaign trail, then turns the focus to what he\u2019s done in a lifetime of public service.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI am Bill Richardson, and when I began this campaign for president, I wasn\u2019t sure what to expect,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> says in the ad. \u201cI knew I would not have every answer, but I will always tell you what I really believe, and I will never mislead you.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI knew there would be differences between the candidates, especially on Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. I\u2019ll get every soldier out. You cannot say you will end the war if you plan to leave thousands of troops behind,\u201d he says. \u201c\u2026 If you are wondering if anyone can really do all this, just look at what I have done in my life and how I\u2019ve done it \u2013 not by dividing people, but by earning their trust. And that\u2019s really where we need to begin in Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. There is a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And the kicker, the moment of truth:<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI approved this message because I\u2019m sure not the best looking, or the flashiest, but I know who I am, and I know how hard I will work for you,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> says at the end of the ad.<\/p>\n

Campaign Manager Dave Contarino said in a news release that Iowans have learned about Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s humor and experience, and they\u2019ve learned about his bravery in rescuing hostages from Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThis new ad allows Gov. Richardson to tell voters in Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> what he is about and why he has been so successful in bringing people together to get things done,\u201d Contarino said. \u201cBill Richardson is the only candidate in this race with both experience and a real vision for change.\u201d<\/p>\n
