\"\"<\/a>Former state Attorney General Patricia Madrid<\/a> has decided against running for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> notified the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee<\/a> and other groups today that she won\u2019t run. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that this is a Democratic year and I would have been the strongest person in the race, but this is just not the year for me,\u201d Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

That\u2019s largely due to the fact that her father, who lives in Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, is not well.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spent quite a number of years away from my family, particularly in my last year in office, and they need me and I need them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/span><\/st1:state> also spoke about her job as a consultant for a powerhouse Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> law firm, and said she\u2019s truly enjoying it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

On the Democratic side, attorney Jon Adams<\/a>, Albuquerque City Councilor Martin Heinrich<\/a> and former state Health Secretary Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a> are running for the House seat. On the Republican side, Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White<\/a> is the only announced candidate. Other Democrats and Republicans are considering the race.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

I asked Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> if she\u2019s run her last race \u2013 she\u2019s run in seven major elections in her lifetime \u2013 and she said she doesn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIt could be enough for any lifetime but I\u2019ve been in this business long enough to know that you never know what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d she said. \u201cI always think of myself as being in politics, but truly I am a lawyer. I\u2019m a lawyer and I\u2019ve gone back to the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:state> noted that she\u2019s actively working for John Edwards\u2019<\/a> presidential campaign and will travel to Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> next week to give a speech about him.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not retiring. I\u2019m just doing a lot of other things, and I just don\u2019t think it\u2019s a time for me to move to Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:state> narrowly lost to Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> last year \u2013 by 861 votes out of more than 211,000 \u2013 in a bitterly fought contest. Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is vacating the seat to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici<\/a>.<\/p>\n
