Herrera dies following battle with cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RxyzgN0SYEI\/AAAAAAAADws\/fhlEi6mCJ0A\/s1600-h\/Herrera,+Manny.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RxyzgN0SYEI\/AAAAAAAADws\/fhlEi6mCJ0A\/s400\/Herrera,+Manny.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124167842086936642\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=199&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Manuel Herrera<\/a>, D-Bayard, died Sunday morning following a long battle with cancer.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Herrera, who had been a member of the Legislature since 1999, was vice chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/committeedisplay.asp?CommCode=HLC\" target=\"_blank\">House Labor and Human Resources Committee<\/a> and a voting member of a number of other committees, and was a fighter for issues in Grant and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hidalgo<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> ordered flags flown at half-staff beginning today in memory of Herrera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cManny Herrera was a quiet but effective advocate for the people in Grant and <st1:state st=\"on\">Hidalgo<\/st1:state> counties,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cI always turned to Manny Herrera on any issue that affected <st1:place st=\"on\">Southwest  New Mexico<\/st1:place>. He will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The county commissions in Grant and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hidalgo<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> counties will now recommend replacements to the governor, who will make an appointment from among those names submitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lt. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> released this statement on Herrera:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe was a solid Democrat who strove to improve the lives of the working poor, especially those who were chronically hungry, and to empower small businesses,\u201d she said. \u201cHis fighting spirit was much admired.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Rep.
