While one national GOP source said Tinsley is \u201chot\u201d in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, he isn\u2019t ruling out the possibility of a dozen people in a primary.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In an interview, Tinsley confirmed his consideration of the race. The restaurant chain owner, who\u2019s also a Capitan rancher, real estate developer and oilman, said he won\u2019t make a decision for at least two weeks. That\u2019s because his wife and daughter are in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and he doesn\u2019t want to consume their trip with talk of a congressional run, so he\u2019ll wait until they return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cFamily is first,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2002, the year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> was first elected. Pearce is vacating the seat at the end of next year because he\u2019s running for the Senate seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLosing that race to Steve was probably one of the hardest things for me to swallow in my life,\u201d Tinsley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the same time, it opened up a new opportunity. Tinsley owns the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kbobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">K-Bob\u2019s<\/a> chain of restaurants, and after the congressional loss he became heavily involved in the influential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restaurant.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Restaurant Association<\/a>, serving last year as the chairman of its board. He said he will have to consider his business interests \u2013 he has company operations in four states \u2013 before deciding whether to run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley\u2019s potential candidacy is also bolstered by the fact that he was recently appointed by President Bush to serve as a trustee for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vallescaldera.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Valles Caldera National Preserve<\/a> in <st1:place st=\"on\">Northern New Mexico<\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley will likely have some serious competition if he decides to get into the congressional race. Though no Republicans have announced their candidacies, state Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=281&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Leonard Lee Rawson<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and Sierra County Republican Party Chair <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlgreer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C. Earl Greer<\/a> have confirmed to me that they\u2019re seriously considering the race. Other Republicans considering the race include state Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=184&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Don Bratton<\/a> of Hobbs, <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=324&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Gray<\/a> of Artesia and <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=237&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Don Tripp<\/a> of Socorro, Roswell businessman and former congressional candidate Phelps Anderson, Roswell High School Principal Mike Kakuska and former Roswell Mayor Bill Owen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A national GOP official, who spoke on condition that his name not be used, said a number of Republicans in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> are very interested in a potential Tinsley candidacy. However, the <a href=\"http:\/\/nrcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Republican Congressional Committee<\/a>, the fundraising arm of House Republicans, won\u2019t endorse anyone in a primary, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The GOP official expects the Roswellians considering the race to defer to one candidate so they don\u2019t split the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Chaves<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> vote. He said a <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> base of support could be a \u201chuge advantage\u201d for Rawson in a primary. The official doesn\u2019t expect a potential Greer candidacy to have any momentum, saying his failed bid to become state party chair earlier this year \u201ctook a lot of steam out of his campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The official said he expects some of the state representatives considering the race to run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The now-open Second Congressional District seat is one many national analysts list as likely to stay in Republican hands, but the seat was frequently listed as being safely in GOP hands before Pearce announced his Senate bid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Still, the fact that it\u2019s not at the top of the list for the NRCC means the candidate who emerges from the primary is going to have to have money \u2013 whether it\u2019s personal wealth or the ability to raise lots of cash in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Republicans know 2008 is going to be a difficult year, and Democrats \u2013 particularly their House counterpart of the NRCC \u2013 are raising a lot more money than Republicans. There\u2019s not enough GOP money to go around next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSomebody\u2019s going to have to sink or swim in that district,\u201d the official said. \u201cSomebody\u2019s going to have to do that on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley has personal wealth and is willing to spend some of it on a run, making his potential candidacy even more attractive to Washington GOP officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Carraro travels to D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rxjnad0SYAI\/AAAAAAAADwM\/HZ9e1PDOqzc\/s1600-h\/Carraro,+Joe.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rxjnad0SYAI\/AAAAAAAADwM\/HZ9e1PDOqzc\/s200\/Carraro,+Joe.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123099018000490498\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The GOP source said the money situation will be a factor, to some degree, in every House race, and noted that state Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=255&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Carraro<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, was in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> on Thursday meeting with GOP officials as he considers running for the House seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, who is also running for Domenici\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Carraro would have to face Bernalillo County Sheriff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bernco.gov\/live\/departments.asp?dept=2318\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a> in a primary. The official said many people Carraro met with on Thursday \u201cthrew water on him\u201d because they like White but, at least officially, they won\u2019t get involved in a primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Still, the spokesperson for the NRCC, commenting on <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/whites-polling-says-hes-easily.html\">White campaign polling<\/a> that shows him as the frontrunner in the race, told the D.C. publication <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roll Call<\/a> that \u201cThe number don\u2019t lie. Darren White is a political heavyweight with widespread appeal and if these numbers mean anything, it is that any Democrat \u2013 currently or considering running \u2013 might want to think twice about getting into this race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">A tough situation for the GOP<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The political wrangling reveals a tough situation for Republicans. They went from having strong incumbents in one Senate and two House seats up for grabs next year to having to defend three open seats. Pearce and Wilson have created an expensive and potentially divisive Senate primary, and there\u2019s some pressure to avoid that in the House races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many GOP officials are concerned about having enough money and also about GOP candidates being damaged in primaries when the mood of the nation already favors Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Three Democrats have already entered the race: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> and former Lea County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/former-lea-county-commissioner-to-run.html\">Harry Teague<\/a>. At least three others are also considering the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Noting the three open seats, Tinsley said he\u2019s a little worried about 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s an unusual situation in a state our size, and I\u2019m sure the Democrats are over there licking their chops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ed Tinsley is seriously considering entering the Second Congressional District race, but a number of other Republicans are also looking.
