{"id":2402,"date":"2007-10-18T15:12:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-18T21:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/dems-unleash-criticism-after-schip-veto-override-fails\/"},"modified":"2007-10-18T15:12:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-18T21:12:00","slug":"dems-unleash-criticism-after-schip-veto-override-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/dems-unleash-criticism-after-schip-veto-override-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Dems unleash criticism after SCHIP veto override fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After an attempt to override a presidential veto of a children\u2019s health insurance bill fell 13 votes short in the U.S. House of Representatives today, Democrats released a barrage of criticism against Republicans, including U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, who refused to change their votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats and a number of Republicans had spent almost two weeks pressuring Pearce and others to vote for the proposal, which would expand the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SCHIP\" target=\"_blank\">State Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program<\/a> (SCHIP) by $35 billion to cover another 4 million children, and fund it through an increase in the federal cigarette tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Supporters of the bill had enough votes to override the veto in the Senate, but, without the same support in the House, it didn\u2019t matter. Pearce and others opposed the bill on the grounds that it was a step toward socialized medicine and expanded coverage to undocumented immigrants, an assertion I examined in a <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/colleagues-mccamley-dispute-pearces.html\">recent article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democratic Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a> put out a news release calling fellow Senate candidate Pearce \u201ca reliable rubberstamp for this White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNo matter what excuses the congressman tries to make for his vote, he can\u2019t change the facts. With one vote, he has denied millions of children \u2013 thousands of them in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> \u2013 an opportunity to receive the health care they need and deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Democratic Party<\/a> Chairman Brian Col\u00f3n agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis cruel action ignores the wishes of 43 of our nation\u2019s governors, as well as bipartisan majorities in Congress and eight in 10 Americans,\u201d he said. \u201cThis vote, therefore, firmly places Steve Pearce in the ideological extreme of our state, and confirms that his values are vastly different from the mainstream of the people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, a moderate Republican also running for Senate, called for a compromise. She has been one of the biggest defenders of the bill in Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile the State Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program will continue under existing law for the time being, the Congress and the president should quickly resolve their outstanding differences and reauthorize this successful program,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> blasted House Republicans who voted against the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBy siding with the president on this failed override vote, 154 Republican members of Congress chose to protect President Bush\u2019s misguided view, rather than protect the health of 10 million children nationwide,\u201d he said. \u201cThis president needs to stop playing politics with the lives and health of 20,000 <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> children and start supporting this bipartisan legislation, which is the highest health-care priority for governors across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce has not released a statement following today\u2019s vote. It\u2019s likely that the White House and Democratic leadership in Congress will begin discussing a compromise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said a few \u201crelatively minor\u201d changes \u201cwould yield a broad, bipartisan coalition to pass this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 6:20 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> called for negotiations on compromise legislation, joining 18 other Republican senators who supported the vetoed bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI regret that the SCHIP program has been caught in a vortex of partisan hyperbole,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cI join my colleagues in demanding that good-faith negotiations begin immediately. This program has been a success and we should find a way to improve the program. A stalemate that leaves more children uninsured is no good for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, a Second Congressional District candidate, blasted House Republicans who voted against the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMany families will now be forced to continue using emergency rooms for care when their children get sick. This is bad for the children and their families, bad for hospitals, and bad for taxpayers, who end up subsidizing expensive emergency care,\u201d McCamley said. \u201cThe fact is that nobody should be afraid to take a sick loved one to a doctor, especially when it is a child who is sick. The failure of the SCHIP bill today is the perfect example of what is wrong with <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and why change is so badly needed. I\u2019m running for Congress to bring that change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 8:35 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> said he was extremely disappointed that the veto override attempt failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMillions of American children lack health insurance. In our state, more than 100,000 young people are uninsured.
