Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> appointed Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> criminal defense attorney Charles W. Daniels<\/a> today to the New Mexico Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In doing so, Richardson<\/st1:city> rejected arguments that the court needed a justice from the south \u2013 such as Robert E. Robles, chief judge of the Third Judicial District Court<\/a> in Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> \u2013 or a woman to replace Justice Pamela B. Minzner<\/a>, who died in August. Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said Daniels was the best candidate.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cCharles Daniels exemplifies the qualities necessary to serve on New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s highest court,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in a news release. \u201cI am confident that Charles Daniels\u2019 leadership, work ethic and impeccable integrity will be a tremendous asset to the state Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniels has been a senior partner in the Friedman, Boyd, Daniels, Hollander, Goldberg and Ives law firm in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> for more than 30 years. He was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 1969.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose Charles Daniels for the Supreme Court given his keen intellect, outstanding reputation and unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said.<\/p>\n

\n

Daniels grew up in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. He and his wife, attorney Randi McGinn, live in the Duke<\/st1:placename> City<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. <\/p>\n

\n

Daniels earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in fine arts from the University<\/st1:placetype> of Arizona<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> and graduated first in his class at the University of New Mexico School of Law. He served as a Prettyman Fellow at Georgetown<\/st1:placename> University<\/st1:placetype> Law<\/st1:placename> Center<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, where he received a masters in trial advocacy. He also served as a professor at UNM.<\/p>\n

Daniels will be up for election in November 2008.<\/p>\n
