{"id":2387,"date":"2007-10-16T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-16T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/madrid-wont-seek-senate-may-consider-house-run\/"},"modified":"2007-10-16T14:30:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-16T20:30:00","slug":"madrid-wont-seek-senate-may-consider-house-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/madrid-wont-seek-senate-may-consider-house-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Madrid won&#8217;t seek Senate, may consider House run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RxUfpN0SXoI\/AAAAAAAADtQ\/7fTv1eMR4r4\/s1600-h\/Madrid,+Patricia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RxUfpN0SXoI\/AAAAAAAADtQ\/7fTv1eMR4r4\/s200\/Madrid,+Patricia.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122034944147873410\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Former state Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patricia_Madrid\" target=\"_blank\">Patricia Madrid<\/a> has decided against running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, but there may be a chance she will run for the First Congressional District House seat she unsuccessfully sought last year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said in an interview that she decided a contested Senate primary <span class=\"phone\">\u201cwill not be good for the Democratic ticket, particularly if I\u2019m running against Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chavezforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">(Martin) Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\">\u201cHe and I have much the same support statewide, and even if the race were friendly and amicable, it still would be competitive, and I would not want to compromise the Democrats\u2019 chances of winning the seat,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> said.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\">Her decision follows a weekend trip to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to discuss the situation with her family.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\">Ch\u00e1vez is the only top-tier Democrat in the race, but Lt. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianedenish.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> is considering it, and political newcomers <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimhannan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Hannan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothermedia.org\/2008platform.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Leland Lehrman<\/a> are also running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the Republican side, U.S. Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> and newcomer <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/oil-man-to-challenge-wilson-in-primary.html\">Spiro G. Vassilopoulos<\/a> are running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state> lost to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> by 861 votes out of more than 211,000 last year in the House race. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s entrance into the Senate race means her House seat is open. Asked if she\u2019s considering running for that seat, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said, \u201cI can\u2019t say at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\">\u201cI think people in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state> are considering it for me,\u201d <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said. \u201cBut I only make one decision at a time.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the Democratic side, attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonadamsforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Adams<\/a>, Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> and former state Health Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/health-secretary-quitting-to-run-for.html\">Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a> are running for the House seat. On the Republican side, Bernalillo County Sheriff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bernco.gov\/live\/departments.asp?dept=2318\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a> is the only announced candidate. Other Democrats and Republicans are considering the race.<span class=\"phone\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><span class=\"phone\">Madrid<\/span><\/st1:state><span class=\"phone\"> said she is \u201cconcerned that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has some Democratic representation, not only in the Senate but also in the House. I am very concerned about putting the strongest candidate forward for Democrats. But that\u2019s not to say I\u2019m running.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"phone\">As she did when I asked earlier this month whether she would run for Senate, Madrid pointed out when asked about the House race that she is \u201cimmensely\u201d enjoying her job as a consultant for a powerhouse Washington law firm.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former state Attorney General Patricia Madrid has decided against running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici, but there may be a chance she will run for the First Congressional District House seat she unsuccessfully sought last year.
