{"id":2367,"date":"2007-10-11T07:56:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-11T13:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/mccamley-gets-endorsements-from-cervantes-peers\/"},"modified":"2007-10-11T07:56:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-11T13:56:00","slug":"mccamley-gets-endorsements-from-cervantes-peers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/mccamley-gets-endorsements-from-cervantes-peers\/","title":{"rendered":"McCamley gets endorsements from Cervantes&#8217; peers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rw4rxCs9MFI\/AAAAAAAADqY\/LmHJGKJ6lxI\/s1600-h\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rw4rxCs9MFI\/AAAAAAAADqY\/LmHJGKJ6lxI\/s200\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5120077947905847378\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> announced Wednesday evening four high-profile endorsements in his bid for the Second Congressional District seat currently held by U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Most striking is the fact that three of the endorsements come from Democratic colleagues of state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, all of them from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. Cervantes is expected to get in the race if Pearce decides to run for Senate next year instead of seeking re-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In endorsing McCamley, a Democrat, Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=323&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Nate Cote<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=205&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Antonio Lujan<\/a> of Las Cruces and <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=213&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Nu\u00f1ez<\/a> of Hatch, along with Public Regulation Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/nmprc.state.nm.us\/commissioner5.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sandy Jones<\/a> of Sierra County, stated in a news release that McCamley \u201cis exactly the kind of representative we need in Washington, and we will work to help him get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the results he has achieved for his constituents as a <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> commissioner, and we\u2019re looking forward to seeing him do even better in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>,\u201d the officials stated in the release from McCamley\u2019s campaign. \u201cThis election is all about bringing fresh ideas, new energy and a focus on results to Congress, and that\u2019s just what we expect from Commissioner McCamley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The legislative endorsements come from half of Cervantes\u2019 colleagues in the House from his own county, and those lawmakers know as well as anyone paying attention to politics in <st1:place st=\"on\">Southern New  Mexico<\/st1:place> that Cervantes is watching closely to see whether Pearce leaves his House seat to run for Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley said in the release that he is \u201chonored to have this strong support from Democrats who represent the Second Congressional District.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTogether, we are getting out the message that it\u2019s time for change in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s time for a representative who focuses on getting results for the people of southern New Mexico, and that\u2019s what I intend to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many assumed Cervantes, if he jumped into the congressional race, would be the immediate Democratic frontrunner. That may still be true, but the endorsements indicate that McCamley, who has been in the race for several months, has built an organization that\u2019s stronger than many Democrats expected. A primary between the two could be difficult to predict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What about the other candidate who\u2019s in the race, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>? A candidate has to get the votes of 20 percent of delegates at the preprimary nominating convention next spring to appear on the June primary ballot. If only McCamley and Kissling are in the race, that\u2019s possible, but it\u2019s highly unlikely Kissling would get the delegate support he needs if McCamley and Cervantes are also vying for those votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The situation might get more complicated. If Pearce gets out, other Democrats may enter the House race. If Pearce stays in, it\u2019s unlikely Cervantes will run.
