Pete Domenici (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A bipartisan group co-led by former U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pete_Domenici\">Pete Domenici<\/a> released its recommendations for dealing with the nation\u2019s debt and deficit on Wednesday. Among its proposals is the implementation of a 6.5 percent national sales tax.<\/p>\n<p>You can find details about the \u201cRestoring America\u2019s Future\u201d plan from the Bipartisan Policy Center <a href=\"http:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/projects\/debt-initiative\/about\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the plan would slash the debt by $6 trillion, but it would do so through some controversial means \u2013 the most controversial being the sales tax that\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/11\/17\/second-group-of-deficit-h_n_784907.html\">already being attacked<\/a> as regressive.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal includes many measures, including suspending some payroll taxes for a year, freezing discretionary domestic spending for four years, and freezing discretionary defense spending for five years.<\/p>\n<p>In September, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/09\/debt-threatens-america%E2%80%99s-future-domenici-says\/\">Domenici warned<\/a> in Las Cruces that the proposal would include tax increases and cuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to ask everybody to love us,\u201d Domenici said at the Domenici Public Policy Conference. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping and praying that the public won\u2019t hate us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read more on the proposal from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/washington\/182333171987newswashington11-18-10.htm\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/1110\/45284.html\">Politico<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/Bipartisan-commission-would-cnnm-2634433398.html?x=0&amp;.v=5\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Domenici\u2019s group is the second in a week to unveil proposals for dealing with the nation\u2019s debt. \u00a0Last week, a group convened by the president recommended <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2010\/11\/10\/obama-panel-offers-4-trillion-in-deficit-cuts\/\">$4 trillion in cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bipartisan group co-led by former U.S. Sen.
