\"\"<\/a>Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White<\/a> made official today his run for the First Congressional District seat being vacated next year by Rep. Heather Wilson<\/a>, and former state Health Secretary Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a> said she\u2019ll formally announce on Thursday that she\u2019s also running. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

White is the only Republican who has entered the race, but Grisham will have to face Martin Heinrich<\/a> and Jon Adams<\/a> in a Democratic primary. Other Democrats and Republicans are also considering entering the race.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In announcing his candidacy at a news conference today in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, White said many elected officials \u2013 Democrat and Republican \u2013 have broken the public\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe deserve better, and I will continue to call things the way I see them and criticize mistakes no matter which party makes them,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

A former cabinet secretary for the state\u2019s Department of Public Safety, White resigned when former Gov. Gary Johnson began advocating for the decriminalization of marijuana. White brought that up during today\u2019s news conference.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cMy integrity and standing up for what I believe is right is more important than a paycheck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

White called for \u201clower taxes and cutting wasteful Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> spending.\u201d He also pledged to support America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s troops by ensuring \u201cthat they have the resources they need for combat.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, mistakes have been made by those in Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and the Iraqi government has not stepped up,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all want to bring the troops home, and I will do just that, but our troops must return in victory because al Qaida must be denied a safe haven in Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI will fight to bring real change to Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and you will always be able to count on my integrity and my independence along the way,\u201d White said. \u201cI know this will be a tough campaign and I\u2019m ready to work hard to earn your vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Grisham confirmed today, in an interview with KKOB-AM<\/a> in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, that she\u2019ll make the formal announcement on Thursday. She resigned her job earlier this year to consider a run for Congress or another elected position.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow I\u2019m making a public announcement about the First Congressional District race,\u201d she said. \u201cMy announcement tomorrow is to\u2026 announce formally my candidacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Grisham told the station she would run on a platform of \u201cnew leadership\u201d and change on issues including the Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> war, energy independence and the environment, and would also promote her background as a strength in working toward health-care and education reform.<\/p>\n
