Commissioners in Sierra and Otero counties have said they plan to schedule elections on possible gross receipts tax increases to help fund <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a>, but neither has done it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Approval of the tax in either county would mean the district is created and money that\u2019s collected in all counties where the tax has been approved can be spent. The 1\/4 of 1 percent tax was approved by voters in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The motion to delay the tax was made by Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district5\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, who pushed hard for its approval but said at today\u2019s meeting that he promised voters at the time that the funding effort would be regional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m going to vote for this because I made that promise,\u201d he said, adding that he understands <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> now plans to hold its election in March. \u201cWe can make sure that we wait on this until <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> makes their decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move delays not only collection of the money that will help fund the spaceport but also the portion \u2013 25 percent \u2013 that will be used for education related to the commercial space industry in Do\u00f1a Ana County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Do\u00f1a Ana County Board of Commissioners voted today to delay collection of the spaceport tax until at least July because no other government has joined the county in creating a regional spaceport district that is required before the money can be spent.
