{"id":2354,"date":"2007-10-09T17:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-09T23:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/richardson-campaign-hits-more-speed-bumps\/"},"modified":"2007-10-09T17:10:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-09T23:10:00","slug":"richardson-campaign-hits-more-speed-bumps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/richardson-campaign-hits-more-speed-bumps\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson campaign hits more speed bumps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwwKyis9LyI\/AAAAAAAADoM\/Hkx2fiapM2Q\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwwKyis9LyI\/AAAAAAAADoM\/Hkx2fiapM2Q\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119478739838512930\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> has come across a few speed bumps in recent days that are slowing attempts to gain ground in the presidential race.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The newest poll done for the <a href=\"http:\/\/desmoinesregister.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20071007\/NEWS09\/71005047\/-1\/caucus&amp;GID=C52Ilf\/WutPCEBCx8aBLzlyiOfm7ma+FuEhiz\/urH4Y%3D\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines Register<\/a> on the Iowa caucuses, released Sunday, has Richardson falling to 8 percent \u2013 down two points from the newspaper\u2019s May poll and 2.3 points below the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/ia\/iowa_democratic_caucus-208.html\" target=\"_blank\">Real Clear Politics<\/a> average of recent polls in Iowa. The difference of about two points is, however, well within the margin or error in all recent polls and the May Des Moines Register poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> also dropped in the newest poll, he\u2019s still 15 points ahead of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> both gained ground in the newest poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Making news of the poll worse was a Saturday report from <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2007\/10\/06\/400441.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">MSNBC<\/a> that the <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> campaign\u2019s co-chair in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> was quitting and instead endorsing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebiden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a>. That\u2019s because he disagreed with <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s assertion that all American soldiers can be withdrawn from <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> in six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThose of us who have had some idea about military evacuations understand that you cannot redeploy troops, or take troops out, or evacuate them within a six-month period of time,\u201d S.C. state Rep. Fletcher Smith told MSNBC in explaining why he quit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He added that <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s plan, in his view, could do the same damage that was caused when Americans were airlifted from <st1:place st=\"on\">Saigon<\/st1:place> in 1975.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe do not need a Vietnam-style evacuation,\u201d he told MSNBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The top-tier Democratic presidential candidates all say <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s withdrawal timeline is unrealistic and that promoting it is irresponsible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071009\/ap_po\/michigan_primary;_ylt=AgGM5c4EuV9_lLopvTnuzEWs0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">making headlines<\/a> again today by being one of four Democrats to file paperwork to withdraw from the ballot in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, a state that bucked the wishes of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic National Committee<\/a> by moving up its primary to Jan. 15, sending the primary calendar into chaos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The moves by <st1:state st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:state> and other states into January make it more difficult for other candidates to catch the frontrunner, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, because of the increase in resources it will take to compete in more states and states with huge media markets. <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> obviously had to drop out of the contest in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. He had no way to win it and wasn\u2019t going to compete there anyway, and his withdrawal is an attempt to push states to follow the DNC\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But it\u2019s not good news for his campaign. The clock keeps ticking toward <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> isn\u2019t climbing in the polls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
