\"\"<\/a>U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., plans to announce later today whether he will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici<\/a>. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

A reliable source confirmed that the congressman will make the announcement this afternoon, but did not know what Pearce\u2019s decision will be. Pearce\u2019s campaign refused to comment.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson<\/a> is currently considered the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in the Senate race, but if Pearce gets in the race, that could change. Newcomer Spiro G. Vassilopoulos<\/a> is also running, assuring a GOP primary regardless of Pearce\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

But a SurveyUSA poll<\/a> conducted this weekend for KOB-TV<\/a> in Albuquerque<\/st1:city> found that Pearce is significantly stronger statewide than Wilson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> in potential head-to-head contests against Democratic opponents.<\/p>\n

New Mexico Land Commissioner Pat Lyons<\/a> is the other Republican actively considering the race.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The SurveyUSA poll has many Republicans pushing Pearce to get in the race, but some Republicans in Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> don\u2019t want to have to defend his House seat without the benefit of his incumbency, and some New Mexico Republicans don\u2019t want to expend resources on a tough Senate primary.<\/p>\n
