Albuquerque Mayor Martin Ch\u00e1vez<\/a> will announce at 11 a.m. Tuesday that he is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Though Ch\u00e1vez would not confirm that he\u2019s running, other sources with firsthand knowledge of his plans did. Ch\u00e1vez would confirm the 11 a.m. news conference at the offices of Eclipse Aviation<\/a> in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, but said only that it is to announce \u201cwhat my intentions are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he could provide any clues about whether he plans to run, Ch\u00e1vez talked about his teenage son and the war in Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to bring our troops home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sources confirmed that the mayor spent much of the weekend on the phone with state lawmakers and others seeking their support for a Senate campaign.<\/p>\n

The move comes about a week after voters in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> rejected Ch\u00e1vez-backed council candidates and referenda in the city election. Some believe Ch\u00e1vez has been weakened by the defeat, but others point out that he\u2019s a shrewd politician who knows how to rebound. <\/p>\n

The mayor joins three lesser-known Democrats who entered the race before news of Domenici\u2019s retirement came last week \u2013 Santa Fe<\/st1:city> developer Don Wiviott<\/a> and Jim Hannan<\/a> of Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and Leland Lehrman<\/a> of Lamy. Wiviott has pledged to spend $2.1 million on a primary and says he will fund that amount himself if he can\u2019t raise it.<\/p>\n

Ch\u00e1vez will have to start from scratch in the fundraising race. Though he was raising cash for a potential 2010 gubernatorial run, the state money can\u2019t be transferred to a federal campaign.<\/p>\n
