John Arthur Smith,\u00a0the LFC chairman, as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers met in October to <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/10\/budget-fix-goes-to-guv-senate-ends-session-with-crime-bills-unheard\/\" target=\"_blank\">plug a shortfall of several hundred million dollars<\/a> in the current fiscal year budget and the previous year&#8217;s budget, largely\u00a0with widespread cuts. But the state&#8217;s fiscal situation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/10\/states-fiscal-crisis-is-not-going-away\/\" target=\"_blank\">hasn&#8217;t improved<\/a> since then. The state is operating with almost no reserves and its budget is dependent on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/30\/business\/international\/opec-energy-oil-saudi-iran.html\" target=\"_blank\">fluctuating oil and gas prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The LFC also reported in its most recent newsletter that three key indicators had all fallen &#8212; projected employment growth, personal income growth, and gross state product, which is the state&#8217;s economic output.<\/p>\n<p>Smith was quoted by The Associated Press as saying lawmakers may have to plug another budget hole when they convene in January for a 60-day session.
