At the end of June, Udall already had more than $700,000 on hand for a 2008 House run, money that can easily be transferred to a Senate race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the other hand, Udall recently secured a coveted seat on the House Appropriations Committee, and he might be hesitant to give that up for what could be a hotly contested primary that might end his political career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">High-ranking Democrats, including Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/schumer.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Schumer<\/a> of New York, have been encouraging Udall for months to consider the Senate race, but they\u2019ve been pushing harder to get Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> to abandon his presidential campaign and enter the Senate race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> made his <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071004\/ap_on_el_pr\/richardson_senate;_ylt=AkFJkKoD4sgBpSHGjcID6xBp24cA\" target=\"_blank\">strongest statement yet<\/a> earlier today that he\u2019s not going to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The floodgates will open if Udall enters the Senate race and leaves an open House seat up for grabs. Democrats who would strongly consider the race include state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=303&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Wirth<\/a>, Public Regulation Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/nmprc.state.nm.us\/commissioner3.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Ben R. Lujan<\/a>, New Mexico Highlands Regent Javier Gonzales, former Richardson Administration lawyer Geno Zamora and Judicial Standards Commission Director Jim Noel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A Noel candidacy would be interesting because he\u2019s married to Amada Cooper, Udall\u2019s daughter and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s deputy campaign manager.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
