As a member of Congress, he can get the best health insurance money can buy, paid for by our tax dollars,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, who is running against Pearce next year, said in a news release. \u201cBut apparently he doesn\u2019t think 11,000 <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> kids deserve any. This is what\u2019s wrong with <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, and this is what I will fight to change when I get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwU3cys9LQI\/AAAAAAAADj8\/rotq2I0PbSY\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwU3cys9LQI\/AAAAAAAADj8\/rotq2I0PbSY\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117557519362632962\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The criticism is driven by more than politics. Democrats also hope to overturn the fourth veto of Bush\u2019s presidency, and they have quite a bit of support from Republicans including U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats in the Senate have the Republican support needed to overturn Wednesday\u2019s veto of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SCHIP\" target=\"_blank\">State Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program<\/a> (SCHIP) bill, but they are about two dozen votes short of the two-thirds majority they need in the House. That means Republicans like Pearce are going to come under a great deal of pressure to break with the president. Support for Bush is at an all-time low in the newest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southcoasttoday.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20071002\/NEWS\/710020353\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News\/Washington Post poll<\/a>, which also found that the SCHIP bill has the support of the majority of Democrats and Republicans across the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The program previously subsidized health coverage for 6.6 million people \u2013 mostly children \u2013 who don\u2019t qualify for Medicaid but can\u2019t afford private insurance. The new bill would expand by the program by $35 billion to cover another 4 million children, and would fund it through an increase in the federal cigarette tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bush argued that the bill is a move toward socialized medicine and Pearce, the only member of the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> delegation to back the president, agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe bill vastly expands the program far beyond its original intent. This is the single largest step toward socialized medicine since HillaryCare,\u201d Pearce said last week in a <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/newscenter\/2007-09-25-SCHIP.html\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a>. \u201cWe all agree on aiding low-income children, but they have abused that bipartisanship by adding in a host of things the American people have repeatedly rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Bipartisan anger and disappointment<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici, in a news release sent Wednesday after the president\u2019s veto, disagreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe we gave the president a good package for continuing SCHIP, which is working in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to make inroads into helping many children without insurance,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cI had hoped the president would change his mind on a veto, and I believe his decision is a mistake. I remain hopeful that we can soon reach an agreement that will get us past the political theater on this issue and begin to build on the success of this worthwhile program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a prepared statement, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> noted that the SCHIP program has already expired and is \u201crunning on life support\u201d in urging her colleagues in the House to overturn the president\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There are more than 93,500 children in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> without health insurance \u2013 about 25 percent of the state\u2019s youth. The legislation would have allowed <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to cover children from 133 percent to 300 percent of the federal poverty level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> joined 28 other Republican and Democratic governors earlier this week in sending the president a letter urging him to sign the bill. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> blasted the president on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cPresident Bush\u2019s veto is irresponsible. It is outrageous. It is simply immoral,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/newsroom\/pressreleases?id=0303\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> sent by his presidential campaign. \u201cOf the many shifting rationales the president has offered for vetoing this bill, one is that it will burden private insurance companies. That sums up everything we need to know about this president. Choosing between insurance companies and children should not be hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> and Lt. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a>, all New Mexico Democrats, also blasted the president in news releases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Pressure on Pearce<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democratic congressional leaders planned to put off a veto override attempt for as long as two weeks to pressure House Republicans to break with the president, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071003\/ap_on_go_pr_wh\/bush_children_s_health;_ylt=AtFG2_xZ2yGZ8jjooFJJTiys0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> reported. Pearce is already a target. In addition to the statement released by McCamley, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee<\/a> put out a news release with the headline \u201cRepresentative Steve Pearce and President Bush trying to block health insurance for 10 million kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe fight for children\u2019s health care is not over. Rep. Steve Pearce will have another chance to show who he stands with \u2013 <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s children or George Bush,\u201d said Jennifer Crider, DCCC communications director. \u201cRep.
