{"id":2320,"date":"2007-10-04T02:15:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-04T08:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/degenerative-brain-disease-forcing-domenici-to-retire\/"},"modified":"2007-10-04T02:15:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-04T08:15:00","slug":"degenerative-brain-disease-forcing-domenici-to-retire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/degenerative-brain-disease-forcing-domenici-to-retire\/","title":{"rendered":"Degenerative brain disease forcing Domenici to retire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwShSys9LMI\/AAAAAAAADjc\/hAmkhbtgL_8\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwShSys9LMI\/AAAAAAAADjc\/hAmkhbtgL_8\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117392420819774658\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> is being forced to retire because he is suffering from a degenerative brain disease that can lead to dementia, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071004\/ap_on_go_co\/domenici_retiring;_ylt=AiMNWx0GUwgiHPWILMBLIKys0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> is reporting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The condition, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frontotemporal_lobar_degeneration\" target=\"_blank\">frontotemporal lobar degeneration<\/a>, can cause a number of syndromes including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frontotemporal_dementia\" target=\"_blank\">frontotemporal dementia<\/a>, the disease that forced former Do\u00f1a Ana County Sheriff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/news\/story.php?news_ID=46\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Hernandez<\/a> to resign in 2004. Domenici\u2019s condition could eventually affect parts of the brain important for organization, decision-making and mood and behavior control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe progress of this disease is apparently erratic and unpredictable. It may well be that, seven years from now, it will be stable,\u201d the 75-year-old Domenici intends to say, according to a draft of remarks prepared for delivery and obtained by the Associated Press. \u201cOn the other hand, it may also be that the disease will have incapacitated me. I am not willing to take a chance that the people who have so honored me with their trust for 40 years might not be served as well as they deserve in the United States Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici\u2019s prepared remarks state that he is confident he will be able to serve the rest of his current term, which will end when a new senator takes office in January 2009. If Domenici was unable to continue serving until then, he would be replaced by a gubernatorial appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The disease had not progressed as recently as April, Domenici\u2019s prepared remarks state, but a checkup in late September revealed a slight progression, and Domenici decided against seeking another term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici will formally announce his retirement at <a href=\"http:\/\/saintmaryscatholicschool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. Mary\u2019s Catholic School<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where he attended grade school, at 4 p.m. today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNo cure for my disease exists, yet,\u201d his prepared remarks state. \u201cBut, if we work hard enough, we may be able to find a way to cure people with diseases of the brain in the future.
