{"id":2316,"date":"2007-10-03T20:23:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-04T02:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/madrid-still-considering-senate-race\/"},"modified":"2007-10-03T20:23:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-04T02:23:00","slug":"madrid-still-considering-senate-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/10\/madrid-still-considering-senate-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Madrid still considering Senate race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwROrys9LII\/AAAAAAAADi8\/EQv18Ci578s\/s1600-h\/Madrid,+Patricia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RwROrys9LII\/AAAAAAAADi8\/EQv18Ci578s\/s200\/Madrid,+Patricia.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117301590851398786\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patricia_Madrid\" target=\"_blank\">Patricia Madrid<\/a>, a former state attorney general, said tonight she is considering whether to run for the open seat in the U.S. Senate following news that the GOP\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> is retiring next year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m getting calls from all over the state,\u201d the prominent Democrat said. \u201cIt\u2019s very complex. I am, of course, talking to my husband of 35 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is considering the fact that she is working for a \u201clucrative\u201d law firm and her job is \u201ccertainly more enjoyable than getting beaten up on television for a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Still, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said the Democrats will need a strong candidate with statewide name recognition who can raise millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere are very few of us in the state, and I\u2019ve done it,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is an opportunity. I will consider every option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said earlier this year she was considering running against Domenici in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She took a job earlier this year as a consultant for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dicksteinshapiro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dickstein Shapiro LLP<\/a>, a firm that represents some of the companies she took to court as the state\u2019s attorney general. She is also traveling around the nation promoting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards\u2019<\/a> campaign for president. <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said she would have to give up helping the Edwards campaign to run for Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCertainly that enters into my thinking as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other factor, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> said, is Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> next move. Though <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> and his campaign continue to insist that he\u2019s not interested in the Senate race, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> sounds skeptical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOf course, we\u2019re all waiting to see what our governor does. And he\u2019s got a choice on his hands,\u201d she said. \u201cDoes he stick it out to get VP or secretary of state, or does he get in to the Senate race?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., last year, losing by 861 votes out of more than 211,000. It was a bitter campaign, and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> took several months to rest after the loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state> seemed to believe <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will run for Senate. She pointed out that <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> has never run in a statewide race, and she beat <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> last year in <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sandoval<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. <st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state> also said <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> wouldn\u2019t beat her in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where she grew up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Patricia Madrid, a former state attorney general, said tonight she is considering whether to run for the open seat in the U.S. Senate following news that the GOP\u2019s Pete Domenici is retiring next year. \u201cI\u2019m getting calls from all over the state,\u201d the prominent Democrat said. \u201cIt\u2019s very complex.
