Domenici has worked hard for all New Mexicans. He will leave the United States Senate as <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s longest serving member, earning a reputation as a statesman and skilled negotiator,\u201d Udall said in a statement released through a spokeswoman. \u201cAlthough we have not always seen eye-to-eye on every issue, we have worked together in the best interest of the state, and I look forward to working with him for the remainder of this Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think I speak for all New Mexicans in thanking him for his leadership and service,\u201d Udall said. \u201cJill and I join all of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in wishing him, his wife Nancy and their entire family all the best in the future. We\u2019re all grateful for his half-century of public service to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> said a statement is in the works. The offices of Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> have not responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall\u2019s statement gave no indication about whether he might jump into the Senate race, but, other than Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>, Udall is perhaps the top-tier Democrat in the best position enter the Senate race. The possible late entry of <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has kept other top-tier Democrats from entering the race thus far, but Udall, like <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, can transfer money from his current campaign fund to a Senate campaign if he decides to run because both races are federal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall could wait until late February or early March to learn whether <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is going to drop out of the presidential race before deciding whether to declare his candidacy for re-election to his House seat or to jump into the Senate race. In the meantime, Udall can continue raising money that he could use for either race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the end of June, Udall had more than $700,000 in the bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has insisted he\u2019s not interested in the Senate seat, but that was before news of Domenici\u2019s retirement. Udall, who recently secured a coveted seat on the House Appropriations Committee, will likely buy his time, knowing he doesn\u2019t want to give that up unless the right situation presents itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bingaman\u2019s office released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs our longest-serving senator in the history of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:State>, Pete Domenici has earned a position of great respect in our state and in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:State>. He continues to represent <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> with great effectiveness and vigor,\u201d the state\u2019s junior senator said. \u201cI look forward to working with him on efforts to help our state and nation during the remainder of this Congress.
