Nate Cote and Jeff Steinborn, Democrats from Southern New Mexico, are both trailing their challengers, and neither sounds optimistic about coming from behind to win.<\/p>\n<p>Cote and Steinborn each trail by about 300 votes. Cote, whose district includes two precincts in Otero County in addition to several in Do\u00f1a Ana County, said he\u2019s not conceding but is also not optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said if I ever lost this district it would be because of Otero County,\u201d Cote said. \u201cOtero County is just too conservative, those voting-straight-ticket Republicans, and although I\u2019ve done a lot of good things for Otero County\u2026 there\u2019s nothing as a Democrat that I could possibly do to win those two precincts over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m clearly disappointed, I\u2019ve been putting a lot of work into it in the last four years,\u201d Cote said.<\/p>\n<p>Cote\u2019s opponent, Republican Rick Little, said he\u2019s optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just thrilled to be here, never running for politics before and being in this position is a good thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11752\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Steinborn-Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Steinborn, Jeff\" width=\"270\" height=\"237\" class=\"size-full\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Steinborn (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Steinborn, who represents part of Las Cruces, also isn\u2019t conceding defeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s prudent to see how everything comes in,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s still a few numbers out there. At this point it\u2019s not looking favorable, but until the numbers are in and we can see the full picture, it would be imprudent to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steinborn said he\u2019s \u201cheartened\u201d by the fact that a constitutional amendment he proposed to create a veterans property tax exemption appears headed for passage.<\/p>\n<p>Steinborn\u2019s opponent, Republican Terry McMillan, could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Reps.
