{"id":2297,"date":"2007-09-28T09:27:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-28T15:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/affordable-housing-committee-to-meet-in-las-cruces\/"},"modified":"2007-09-28T09:27:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-28T15:27:00","slug":"affordable-housing-committee-to-meet-in-las-cruces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/affordable-housing-committee-to-meet-in-las-cruces\/","title":{"rendered":"Affordable housing committee to meet in Las Cruces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The legislative committee that oversees the state\u2019s affordable housing system will meet Monday in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/committeedetail.asp?CommCode=MFA\" target=\"_blank\">Legislative Mortgage Finance Authority Act Oversight Committee<\/a> will hear updates from the two regional housing authorities still operating after the rest of the system crumbled amid scandal last year, and will also learn about and tour affordable housing projects in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:PlaceName>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/agendas\/ageoct1.07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The meeting begins at 10 a.m. in the Barbara Hubbard Room at the <st1:placename st=\"on\">Pan<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placename st=\"on\">American<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:PlaceType> on the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:PlaceType>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> campus. It is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cDuring this meeting we will be continuing our review of the challenges and opportunities our state faces in the area of affordable housing, and this includes a review of the performance of our regional housing authorities,\u201d said Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=283\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Rodriguez<\/a>, D-Santa Fe and chair of the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republican Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=281\" target=\"_blank\">Leonard Lee Rawson<\/a> is the only member of the committee from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Most of the state\u2019s affordable housing system collapsed last year when the Albuquerque-based Region III authority defaulted on $5 million in bonds it owed the state. Those bonds were to be spent on affordable housing projects, but almost $900,000 instead went to the former director as salary, benefits and a questionable loan, and some $700,000 was loaned to the Las Cruces-based Region VII authority for administrative costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saonm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">state auditor<\/a> is currently conducting a review to try to determine the extent of the problems, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmag.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">attorney general<\/a> is investigating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The legislative committee that oversees the state\u2019s affordable housing system will meet Monday in Las Cruces.
