Shortly before the lawsuit was filed last year, attorneys won a similar case against <st1:placename st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype>, and those lawyers were brought on board to help with the lawsuit against <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_6994484\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> is reporting today that the seven original plaintiffs will each get $25,000. The case will also be certified as a class-action lawsuit so hundreds of others can be eligible for payments of between $1,200 and $2,400.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The settlement is awaiting approval of a judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For years before the lawsuit was filed, the county had a policy of strip-searching most inmates when they were booked into the jail. Federal courts have ruled several times that such searches are only allowed on a case-by-case basis when there\u2019s reason to suspect someone might be smuggling items into the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The county has since modified its policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do\u00f1a Ana County has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a lawsuit charging its jail with illegally strip-searching inmates.
