So in response to Mr. Murphy’s misleading information, I will highlight my experience in property tax assessment and my continued dedication to this community.

During my 12-year career in property assessment I have worked for the two largest counties in New Mexico, Bernalillo County and Doña Ana County. I am designated as a certified appraiser by the New Mexico Property Tax Division, and have successfully completed numerous appraisal courses. I have served in several professional organizations, including the International Association of Assessing Officers, the New Mexico Association of Counties Assessor’s Affiliate and as the GIS chairman for the Assessor’s GIS Affiliate.

As a member of these committees, I have acquired a considerable amount of knowledge about property tax laws and regulations.

Over the last eight years as chief deputy assessor I have developed a strong and educated staff. Our mission and commitment to the public is simple – listen first, continue to provide great customer service, continue to provide fair and equitable assessments and continue to provide state-of-the-art technology and resources to our business community and taxpayers. My experience in government along with my background as a business owner will contribute to our continued success.

As a taxpayer myself, I also feel the burden of taxes, so I continue to work hard to maintain a fair, effective and transparent office. I maintain a balanced budget with cost saving measures, and Doña Ana County continues to be a leader in property assessment and in developing and refining statewide regulations within the State of New Mexico.

During our annual evaluation, the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department was quite complimentary, stating, “The Dona Ana County Assessor’s Office is extremely well-organized and staffed with trained and competent professionals.” It goes on to say that all aspects of the assessment and valuation process are carried out according to state statutes.

If elected, my experience in assessment and my ability to listen places me in the best position to continue to accomplish my duties in a way that is both sensitive to the county’s taxpayers and fair to the entities that rely on property tax revenues.

Service to the community

I was raised in Mesilla, I graduated from Las Cruces High School and I have a degree from New Mexico State University in applied arts and science. I have earned licensure as a private pilot and as a general builder. My 20 year marriage to my wife Tish has blessed us with two wonderful children, Andres and Samantha.

My service to this community has included serving as a planning and zoning commissioner for the Town of Mesilla and as treasurer of the Whole Enchilada Fiesta, but my biggest contribution to this community is working with our youth. I have coached football for 10 years and I currently serve as a board member with Las Cruces Horseman’s Association and the Doña Ana County 4H Club.

My commitment remains simple – I am active and dedicated to working for you. I listen and I am fair. Please remember, experience is the difference, and experience matters in the Assessor’s Office. I am available to answer any questions regarding my candidacy for county assessor. I can be reached at 640-5675.

Segovia is the chief deputy assessor in Doña Ana County and the Democratic candidate for county assessor.

As your chief deputy assessor and your candidate for Doña Ana County assessor, I have pledged to run a positive campaign and I will hold true to that promise.
