{"id":2263,"date":"2007-09-20T08:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-20T14:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/ethics-probe-guvs-future-keep-senate-race-uncertain\/"},"modified":"2007-09-20T08:10:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-20T14:10:00","slug":"ethics-probe-guvs-future-keep-senate-race-uncertain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/ethics-probe-guvs-future-keep-senate-race-uncertain\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethics probe, guv&#8217;s future keep Senate race uncertain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuXP5oBJ7TI\/AAAAAAAADVI\/yo-AdMleL8k\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuXP5oBJ7TI\/AAAAAAAADVI\/yo-AdMleL8k\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108717941223451954\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The dynamics of the 2008 race for the Senate seat held by GOP giant <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> remain uncertain as an ethics probe heats up and Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> comments don\u2019t entirely rule out his entrance into the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Senate ethics committee has stepped up its probe of Domenici\u2019s involvement in the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney scandal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthout.org\/docs_2006\/091907A.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Truthout.org<\/a> is reporting. In the past two weeks, the committee has interviewed potential witnesses, including staffers from the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> attorney\u2019s office in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, about Domenici\u2019s October 2006 call to former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias alleges Domenici pressured him to speed indictments in a case involving high-ranking Democrats to sway voters in the November 2006 election. Iglesias was fired weeks later, he claims as a result of refusing the pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Truthout.org is reporting, citing unnamed senior staffers who work for lawmakers who sit on the ethics committee, that the six-month preliminary investigation has found enough evidence to result in a \u201cformal, public investigation\u201d into Domenici\u2019s actions. But that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean there will be such an investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House have a longstanding agreement to not file ethics complaints against each other that would trigger formal investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Guv\u2019s entrance \u2018wishful thinking?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuXP6YBJ7VI\/AAAAAAAADVY\/vmouMcBt5eo\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuXP6YBJ7VI\/AAAAAAAADVY\/vmouMcBt5eo\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108717954108353874\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The news of the continuing probe comes as <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roswell-record.com\/main.asp?FromHome=1&amp;TypeID=1&amp;ArticleID=15798&amp;SectionID=51&amp;SubSectionID=124\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> in an interview on Wednesday that he is running for president, not another office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A number of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> insiders have been encouraging the governor to get out of the presidential race to run against Domenici or, if he fails to win the Democratic presidential nomination, to get into the senate race at that point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had this to say:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat\u2019s wishful thinking by a lot of people,\u201d he told the news service. \u201cI\u2019m running for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s not a \u201cno,\u201d you\u2019ll notice. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> also said what he has said repeatedly: that he is \u201cnot interested in being vice president.\u201d Still, at other times, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has said he would not rule out being vice president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the same interview, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> told the news service, in comments published in a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070919\/ap_po\/richardson_ap_interview;_ylt=AsKJfKFTO4uq365eo7.Hwcis0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">separate article<\/a>, that he is \u201cgoing to win this (presidential) nomination. You watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Strong words. Of course he has to say he\u2019s not running for anything else. Right now, he\u2019s not. But Domenici\u2019s poll numbers have his popularity hovering at just above 50 percent, while <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s numbers are in the mid-60s in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s presidential campaign is currently stagnant. Unless he turns it around, he\u2019s going to have to decide in the next few months what he wants to do next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He has said he will remain governor, but he can only do that for a few more years. Would <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> really turn down a chance to take out Domenici when he\u2019s at his weakest and win an influential job he could potentially hold for the rest of his life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ongoing investigation and the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> factor might end up having no effect on Domenici\u2019s re-election chances. Or, either or both could become keys to the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All that makes the next few months very interesting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">A race to watch<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici has three lesser-known Democratic challengers thus far: <a href=\"http:\/\/donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimhannan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Hannan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothermedia.org\/2008platform.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Leland Lehrman<\/a>. Lehrman has done little to indicate he\u2019s running an active campaign. Hannan has been consistently running ads attacking Domenici in newspapers in <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And people are starting to talk about Wiviott. Many who have seen the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> developer speak publicly are walking away with a surprisingly favorable impression and higher hopes that Domenici might be beaten in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Regardless of whether <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> gets into the race, this remains one to watch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dynamics of the 2008 race for the Senate seat held by GOP giant Pete Domenici remain uncertain as an ethics probe heats up and Gov.
