Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> has decided to put the weight of her endorsement \u2013 and some cash \u2013 behind the campaign of Steven Monta\u00f1o, who is running for an open seat on the Las Cruces City Council.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe understands economic development and he understands the city of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>,\u201d Denish said. \u201cHe\u2019ll work with the other councilors to make sure good things happen for the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Monta\u00f1o is one of three candidates running on Nov. 6 for the seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district4.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Trowbridge<\/a>, who decided against seeking re-election. Denish Campaign Manager Steve Fitzer said the lieutenant governor has \u201chad the chance to work very closely with Steve (Monta\u00f1o).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RukkbBfzR3I\/AAAAAAAADXo\/GmmbsRx267k\/s1600-h\/Denish,+Diane.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RukkbBfzR3I\/AAAAAAAADXo\/GmmbsRx267k\/s200\/Denish,+Diane.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109655298905425778\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>That\u2019s at least in part because Monta\u00f1o runs the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> office of the state\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/edd.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Development Department<\/a>. When Denish is in town, Monta\u00f1o often helps with coordination of events and other tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI feel honored that the second-highest elected official in the state would go out of her way to endorse a local candidate here in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>,\u201d Monta\u00f1o said. \u201cIt\u2019s quite an honor when one of your bosses will endorse you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Denish is backing up the endorsement with some cash. Her campaign pays for an ad that runs in the left column on this site. For the next four weeks, she will be using the space to run an ad promoting Monta\u00f1o\u2019s campaign, instead of the Denish ad that has been running since July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other candidates running for the District 4 seat are local businessman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaacechavez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Chavez<\/a> and Nathan Small, a member of the county\u2019s Planning and Zoning Commission and an employee of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmwild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Wilderness Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Asked if Denish will make any other endorsements in the upcoming <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> city election, Fitzer said the lieutenant governor \u201cis not really aware of the other candidates running down there.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lt.
