{"id":2231,"date":"2007-09-12T21:02:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-13T03:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/mattiace-formally-announces-re-election-bid\/"},"modified":"2007-09-12T21:02:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-13T03:02:00","slug":"mattiace-formally-announces-re-election-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/09\/mattiace-formally-announces-re-election-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Mattiace formally announces re-election bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuioVRfzR1I\/AAAAAAAADXY\/3U49LyQv5E8\/s1600-h\/Mattiace,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RuioVRfzR1I\/AAAAAAAADXY\/3U49LyQv5E8\/s200\/Mattiace,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109518860679333714\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Las Cruces Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/mayor.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">William \u201cBill\u201d Mattiace<\/a> announced today, at a news conference on the steps of City Hall, his re-election bid.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said several months ago that he would seek one more term, but today marked Mattiace\u2019s official campaign announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have been honored and humbled to serve this city for eight years, more than four of them as mayor,\u201d he said. \u201cI have enjoyed facing the challenges of leading this council and the people of this city. This job requires more than just encouragement from friends or a simple lifelong dream to be mayor. It requires responsibility, dedication, leadership and diplomacy. I know because I am the mayor. And I want to keep working for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His remarks seemed to be largely directed at challenger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district6.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a>, the District 6 councilor who has been extremely critical of the mayor and other councilors and is building a campaign largely based on his assertion that growth is out of control and needs to be slowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miyagishima has said being the city\u2019s mayor is a dream he\u2019s had since childhood and that he decided to jump into the race after widespread encouragement and positive feedback about a possible campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mattiace said he\u2019s seeking another term for better reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI seek re-election because we\u2019ve come so far in such a short time,\u201d Mattiace said. \u201cAnd for someone to come along and start tearing down what this city has accomplished simply because they want to get elected is an insult to our citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSome people may want to enter the race at the encouragement of their friends and those who would seek to benefit from the office,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I only decided to enter the race after the encouragement of those who pay the price for my service, my family. When those you love, who oftentimes don\u2019t get to see me all day, feel that it\u2019s important that I continue, that says something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mattiace, who is originally from <st1:state st=\"on\">New  York<\/st1:state>, has lived in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> since 1968. He was the city\u2019s District 2 councilor from 1999 to 2003, when he defeated Miyagishima in a special election to become mayor. Later that year, he defeated Miyagishima and three other challengers in a regularly scheduled election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mattiace is married to Wanda Nicolitz Mattiace, and the two own Adventure Travel. They have three children: Michelle, an attorney, William, a senior at <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> and Lauren, a sophomore at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">High School<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In listing accomplishments of his first term, Mattiace noted that the city has been named the safest small city in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and that its youth and after-school programs have been nationally recognized. He also said the city has adhered to \u201cresponsible growth policies that incorporate community centers, senior centers and rehabilitation of our existing neighborhoods and roads.\u201d Mattiace also cited success in \u201crecruiting new businesses, creating new jobs and improving the jobs we already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOur growth has always been about becoming better, not bigger. The growth in this city can be measured in our character, not just our number of homes,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is very clear in our attention to community services, the care for our senior citizens and our responsible management of utilities and taxpayer dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">A prior version of this posting incorrectly stated that Miyagishima is the District 2 councilor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Las Cruces Mayor William \u201cBill\u201d Mattiace announced today, at a news conference on the steps of City Hall, his re-election bid.
