For the third time, he\u2019s challenged by District 6 Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district6.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a>, who received 25 percent of the vote in 2003 to Mattiace\u2019s 40 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This time might be different, however. Three other candidates split the other 35 percent of the vote in 2003. In addition to the likelihood that there will be fewer candidates in the race this time, Miyagishima has developed a stronger platform and message \u2013 that growth in Las Cruces is out of control and needs to be slowed \u2013 than he has presented in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miyagishima is backed by an active group of citizens who have been galvanized by the council\u2019s recent approval of a large and controversial development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many local political watchers believe the race between Mattiace and Miyagishima could be tight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Las Cruces Mayor Bill Mattiace, who is facing a tough fight to keep his job, plans to open his home for the first time this weekend to anyone who wants to meet with him.
