The funding is not currently included in the House version of the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the Senate bill includes $21.7 million for levee repairs in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> and the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> area. Domenici said he\u2019ll work to make sure it\u2019s in the final bill sent to the president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Officials say the county needs between $600 million and $2 billion to upgrade its flood system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt is important that these resources be made available as soon as possible so work can begin on shoring up this aging levee system,\u201d Domenici said in a news release. \u201cI\u2019m pleased with Senate approval of this funding, and now I will work to see that it remains in the final bill we send to the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The 60-year-old levee system in the Do\u00f1a Ana County\/El Paso area, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is not only in disrepair but is of inadequate height to protect against flooding. Domenici has pushed for more funding since last summer\u2019s floods that devastated Hatch and affected other parts of the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cSen. Domenici\u2019s announcement today has great potential to be welcome news to thousands of Do\u00f1a Ana County residents whose properties will require flood insurance if this levee system is not reinforced and recertified,\u201d county spokesman Jess Williams said. \u201cWe urge all property owners to write to President Bush and the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> congressional delegation seeking unwavering support to fully fund the proposal as it stands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\">A prior version of this posting misstated what the estimated $600 million to $2 billion was needed for.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Senate approved on Thursday $11.7 million requested by Sen.
