Perea has announced his candidacy for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/municourt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Municipal Court<\/a> judge.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The position is currently held by Melissa Miller-Byrnes, the court\u2019s presiding judge, but is up for grabs on Nov. 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Perea is a private-practice attorney. He was an officer with the Las Cruces Police Department for 20 years before being appointed as a magistrate judge in 1999. Upon completion of his appointed term, he earned his law degree from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype>  of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. He has since worked with the Third Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and has been a magistrate judge pro tempore since 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Perea said he is running \u201cto restore the confidence that has been lost in our Las Cruces Municipal Court. The Las Cruces Municipal Court, as all courts, must be an unbiased forum in which all parties receive fair treatment, and I have proven that I can provide this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perea is a lifelong resident of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> and has lived in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> since 1979. He has also has served as a trainer\/instructor for the University of New Mexico Judicial Education Center and as a volunteer <st1:street st=\"on\"><st1:address st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a Ana County Teen Court<\/st1:address><\/st1:street> judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is my community and I will work hard to ensure that it is a community of justice where everyone will be heard,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe in open government. The Municipal Court is a branch of our city government that must be open. The citizens of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> have a right to know and the court has an obligation to report.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conrad F.
