Teague wanted it to focus specifically on veterans\u2019 issues, while Pearce wanted it to be open to any topic about which the moderator asked.<\/p>\n<p>That was the sticking point, and it now appears that the debate won\u2019t happen at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPearce rejects veterans debate in Alamogordo,\u201d a Teague news release stated Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a shame that Congressman Pearce has rejected the opportunity to have an hour-long conversation, proposed nearly a month ago, about a topic as important as our veterans,\u201d Teague Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>The Pearce campaign responded in its own release by accusing Teague of withdrawing from the Alamogordo debate after \u201cpoor performance\u201d in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/09\/teaguepearce-debate-gets-contentious\/\">the Las Cruces debate<\/a> held earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Teague\u2019s) staff demanded that all radio debates be a sanitized, single-issue debate,\u201d the Pearce release stated.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Pearce\u2019s campaign also released part of an e-mail it said it sent to the Teague campaign during debate negotiations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Pearce campaign\u00a0consented 100%\u00a0to the Teague campaign\u2019s choice of dates, times, locations, communications medium and rules [including issue] at the KRWG Las Cruces debate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Pearce campaign submitted\u00a0proposed rules for the\u00a0KZZX radio debate on September 3. On September 20, we received your counter to our rules.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Pearce campaign will again agree to the Teague campaign\u2019s choice of dates, times, locations, and communications medium (radio only).\u00a0However, we believe the voters deserve better than a single issue,\u00a0sanitized debate without each candidate having the ability to answer and\/or rebut every question.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs we have stated from the beginning, we strongly believe that every debate should cover a broad range of topics important to all voters. There is no doubt Veteran\u2019s issues are incredibly important\u00a0and should be included in any debate but\u00a0so\u00a0are jobs, the economy, border security, immigration, healthcare, etc.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Teague announced that he\u2019s still planning on an Oct. 4 debate in Artesia focused solely on congressional reform, but with him insisting on the specific topic and Pearce insisting on a general topic, there\u2019s a good chance that debate won\u2019t happen either.<\/p>\n<p>Teague also announced that he\u2019s agreed to participate in an Oct. 19 debate in Carlsbad on a \u201cwide range of issues.\u201d Both have agreed to general, televised debates on Oct. 24 in Albuquerque and Oct. 27 in Las Cruces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A planned Monday radio debate between Democratic U.S. Rep.
