{"id":2142,"date":"2007-08-23T11:57:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-23T17:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/after-a-brief-climb-domenicis-support-falls-again\/"},"modified":"2007-08-23T11:57:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-23T17:57:00","slug":"after-a-brief-climb-domenicis-support-falls-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/after-a-brief-climb-domenicis-support-falls-again\/","title":{"rendered":"After a brief climb, Domenici&#8217;s support falls again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rs3K0oBJ6RI\/AAAAAAAADNA\/ofcg9wzbplo\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rs3K0oBJ6RI\/AAAAAAAADNA\/ofcg9wzbplo\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5101956958324910354\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Support for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., has dropped once again as he faces a barrage of criticism from the left and right, but he still hasn\u2019t drawn a well-known challenger to take him on next year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the newest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=f07bb739-782d-4f5a-9d72-706f72a96413\" target=\"_blank\">SurveyUSA Poll<\/a>, Domenici\u2019s approval rating has fallen to 52 percent, one point above his lowest rating since the monthly survey began in May 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve already reported on the <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/domenici-resists-pressure-to-support.html\">Sierra Club\u2019s assault<\/a> on Domenici for opposing a requirement that electric companies derive 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. On Wednesday, Americans United For Change began airing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americansunitedforchange.org\/blog\/entries\/endless_ad_domenici\/\" target=\"_blank\">this television ad<\/a> in the <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> market attacking Domenici for \u201cstill standing with President Bush on <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>, voting time and again against bringing our troops home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And the conservative Freedom\u2019s Watch is airing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomswatch.org\/video.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">these ads<\/a> in various markets, including <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city>, to pressure members of Congress to support Bush\u2019s <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici has broken ranks with the president, supporting a bipartisan proposal to begin withdrawing American combat troops from <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> as soon as next spring, but he opposes cutting war funding or bringing the troops home now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Support for Domenici rose last month to 55 percent from its low of 51 percent in June. It was the first time his support had climbed in months, and it appeared the senator was finally recovering from the <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/U.S.%20attorney\">U.S. attorney scandal<\/a> that caused the dip in his popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The newest drop in his popularity indicates that other factors besides the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney scandal are a drag on his support. Most likely, the public doesn\u2019t see his break with Bush on <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> as genuine, or doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the newest poll, 41 percent said they disapprove of the job Domenici is doing. That is unchanged from July. The newest poll, conducted Aug. 10-12, surveyed 600 adults and has a margin of error of 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Congress is currently on a break, and Domenici is touring the state. He was in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Wednesday. You can read about it and see video from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_6694193\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici has also been actively raising money for his 2008 re-election campaign. Three political newcomers have entered the race against him, all Democrats, but Domenici has yet to draw a top-tier challenger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the newest poll, support for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., rose to 61 percent, up one point from July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Support for U.S. Sen.
