{"id":21320,"date":"2010-09-07T11:11:25","date_gmt":"2010-09-07T17:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=21320"},"modified":"2010-09-07T11:11:30","modified_gmt":"2010-09-07T17:11:30","slug":"televised-congressional-debates-are-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/09\/televised-congressional-debates-are-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Televised congressional debates are coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10937\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10937\" title=\"US Capitol\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/US-Capitol-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/US-Capitol-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/US-Capitol.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The U.S. Capitol building (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The candidates for New Mexico\u2019s 2nd and 3rd congressional district seats have agreed to two televised debates in the coming weeks, while in the 1st District both candidates have agreed to one televised debate, but the Democrat, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\">Martin Heinrich<\/a>, has rejected the second.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2nd District, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\">Harry Teague<\/a> and Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\">Steve Pearce<\/a> have agreed to debate on Oct. 24 on KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, as have 3rd District candidates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benrlujan.com\/\">Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n<\/a>, the Democrat, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mullinsforcongress.com\/\">Tom Mullins<\/a>, the Republican. Those debates will be at 4 and 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The 2nd District candidates will also take part in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmfirst.org\/\">New Mexico First<\/a>-sponsored debate in the KRWG-TV studio in Las Cruces on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The 3rd District candidates will do the same on Oct. 9 in the KENW-TV studio in Portales. Heinrich and Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonbarela.com\/\">Jon Barela<\/a> will participate in the New Mexico First series by debating on Oct. 15 in the KNME-TV studio in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12958\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12958\" title=\"Heinrich-Martin2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Heinrich-Martin2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martin Heinrich<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Heinrich, however, rejected the invitation to participate in a debate sponsored by KOAT and the Albuquerque Journal, and he\u2019s getting hammered for it.<\/p>\n<p>KOAT\u2019s Doug Fernandez said in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UUPXVO7zzQ8\">this TV report<\/a> that Heinrich \u201crefused\u201d to participate in the debate. He said Heinrich\u2019s campaign disagreed \u201cwith the standard format that KOAT and the Albuquerque Journal have used for years, and it\u2019s the format all the other congressional candidates have agreed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeinrich\u2019s camp wanted to limit the debate to just a few issues, but KOAT and the Journal feel strongly that candidates should be able to address a wide range of issues important to New Mexicans,\u201d KOAT\u2019s Shelly Ribando said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/metro\/040921metro09-04-10.htm\">Journal\u2019s story<\/a> states that Heinrich \u201cdeclined after the station refused to limit the scope of the debate to a few topics that would be revealed to campaigns before the debate.\u201d But the New Mexico First debate, the Journal pointed out, \u201chas no limits on subject matter, and questions will be selected the day of the event by people who attend a town hall preceding the debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barela and the state GOP are accusing Heinrich of ducking debates.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that a congressman is refusing to debate and defend his record is unbelievable and disrespectful to the voters who are wanting to make an informed choice on who to support in this election,\u201d Barela said in a news release. \u201cMartin Heinrich has a duty to New Mexicans, as an elected representative, to\u00a0explain\u00a0his voting record to his constituents, even if it\u2019s comprised of a string of expensive and unpopular votes for higher taxes, spending and debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heinrich\u2019s campaign spokeswoman, Marsha Garcia, said there\u2019s no ducking of debates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past week, Martin participated in a debate and a neighborhood public forum with his opponent,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cMartin will participate in several additional debates in the coming weeks, including a televised debate sponsored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/62707\/new-mexico-first-sponsors-congressional-debates\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico First and New Mexico Public Broadcasters KNME<\/a> and another one sponsored by the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately it\u2019s not possible for us to accept every invitation, but we will be releasing a debate schedule in the coming days,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The candidates for New Mexico\u2019s 2nd and 3rd congressional district seats have agreed to two televised debates in the coming weeks, while in the 1st District both candidates have agreed to one televised debate, but the Democrat, Martin Heinrich, has rejected the second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11,1],"tags":[108,111,116],"class_list":["post-21320","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-and-analysis","category-uncategorized","tag-2010-election","tag-open-government","tag-washington"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21320","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=21320"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21320\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=21320"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=21320"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=21320"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
