He hasn\u2019t spent hardly any time in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, has little name recognition there and wasn\u2019t even worth mentioning in a <a href=\"http:\/\/detnews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070815\/POLITICS01\/708150398\/1022\/POLITICS\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit News<\/a> article on the most recent poll conducted there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That poll, conducted earlier this month by the newspaper and a local television station, found that, when <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al_gore\" target=\"_blank\">Al Gore<\/a> was included, he was winning with 36 percent of the vote to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton\u2019s<\/a> 32 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama\u2019s<\/a> 16 percent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards\u2019<\/a> 8 percent. Without Gore in the poll, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had 45 percent, Obama had 26 percent and Edwards had 16 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The newspaper didn\u2019t release the totals for the other candidates in the race, including <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:state> would be the first large state to hold its primary, making <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> \u2013 a critical state for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u2013 less influential in the process. Having to compete in a large media market like <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Detroit<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s at such an early date makes the road harder for candidates with less money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move to Jan. 15 will require <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Hampshire<\/st1:state>, by state law, to hold its primary on Jan. 8 or earlier and might push <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, unless it decides to ignore its own state law, to hold its caucuses in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So there\u2019s a lot of uncertainty in the process right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:state>\u2019s change comes after the recent decision by Florida Republicans to jump ahead of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>\u2019s Jan. 29 primary and hold their own on Jan. 19. That had already prompted speculation that <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> might hold its primary on Jan. 8, since it\u2019s tradition to hold it on Tuesday, but officials in the Granite State were leaning toward a Saturday primary on Jan. 12 to keep Iowa in January, until the news from Michigan made that illegal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No one actually wants to push the first contests into December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Where will this end? It\u2019s a little early to tell.
