\"\"<\/a>Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano<\/a> apparently wants to be the state\u2019s lieutenant governor. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He sent a news release today from the e-mail address solanoltgov@aol.com<\/a> announcing that he\u2019ll hold a news conference on Tuesday in Santa Fe<\/st1:city> to \u201caddress plans to run a political campaign for a New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> statewide office.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And he posted an article on his blog<\/a> today stating that \u2013 despite the new e-mail address with \u201cltgov\u201d in it, he would not confirm or deny \u201cthe rumor going around\u201d that he\u2019s running for lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

While refusing to answer the lieutenant governor question, Solano told the Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a> that he can conduct a political campaign while serving as sheriff.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done that effectively while I ran for re-election. I have a very good staff,\u201d he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Solano wrote on his blog in January<\/a> that supporters had asked him to consider running for lieutenant governor in 2010. He said that prompted him to research the fact that there is no process in state law for replacing the lieutenant governor if that person moves up to fill a vacancy in the governor\u2019s office \u2013 a scenario that is possible at the end of next year.<\/p>\n

Solano has been sheriff for five years. He\u2019s a native of Santa Fe<\/st1:city> who graduated from Santa Fe<\/st1:placename> High School<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> and took some community colleges classes but doesn\u2019t have a college degree. He has two children, a 15-year-old daughter and 21-year-old son, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Former Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron<\/a> has also announced that she\u2019s seeking the lieutenant governorship. Candidates are likely lining up early because, if Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> does leave the state, the position will be open in January 2009.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

There\u2019s not currently a process in state law for replacing the lieutenant governor if she becomes governor. Lawmakers considered a bill this year that would have proposed a constitutional amendment to voters creating a process for replacing the lieutenant governor, but it died when time expired on the session.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
