{"id":2117,"date":"2007-08-17T14:04:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-17T20:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/domenici-resists-pressure-to-support-udall-sponsored-provision-that-would-mandate-renewable-energy-use\/"},"modified":"2007-08-17T14:04:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-17T20:04:00","slug":"domenici-resists-pressure-to-support-udall-sponsored-provision-that-would-mandate-renewable-energy-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/domenici-resists-pressure-to-support-udall-sponsored-provision-that-would-mandate-renewable-energy-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Domenici resists pressure to support Udall-sponsored provision that would mandate renewable energy use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsX_nIBJ5zI\/AAAAAAAADJQ\/xYwr2hkaE6A\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsX_nIBJ5zI\/AAAAAAAADJQ\/xYwr2hkaE6A\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099763200699262770\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., is calling for expansion of domestic oil and gas production and increased use of alternative energy but is resisting pressure to support a House-approved bill requiring electric companies to derive 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici\u2019s stance pits him against U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, D-N.M., who secured a major victory recently when the House accepted his proposal to require that utility companies incrementally increase their use of renewable energy from 2.75 percent in 2010 to 15 percent by 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsX_q4BJ50I\/AAAAAAAADJY\/8APR7PDFzK8\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsX_q4BJ50I\/AAAAAAAADJY\/8APR7PDFzK8\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099763265123772226\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>As the ranking GOP member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Domenici\u2019s stance is important to any debate on the establishment of what\u2019s called a Renewable Energy Standard. He was instrumental in blocking such a standard from being included in an energy bill passed by the Senate in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Sierra Club began a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/domenici\" target=\"_blank\">media campaign<\/a> this week that includes billboards and radio and television advertisements. It\u2019s called the \u201cDomenici, Don\u2019t Dim Our Future\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a news release from the Sierra Club, Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabq.gov\/council\/ccdist3.html\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Benton<\/a> pointed out that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has already set a 20-percent benchmark energy companies must meet by 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe federal government needs to do their part, and it starts with Sen. Domenici,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Sierra Club accused Domenici of pushing for \u201cbillions in subsidies to the oil, gas, coal and nuclear industries,\u201d but said he \u201chas another chance this fall to do the right thing\u201d when the differences between the two bills are reconciled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Congress is on a break and Domenici, in a speech given today in Ruidoso, said he won\u2019t support the House bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe House bill raises oil and gas taxes and fees, and restricts production areas. In the long run, these provisions will hurt American businesses by giving a competitive advantage to foreign producers,\u201d he said and a meeting of the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico, according to a news release. \u201cA comprehensive strategy must include clean, renewable technology, conservation and efficiency and domestic production as the only way in providing a secure energy future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici said the nation\u2019s growth has contributed to an increasing demand for oil and natural gas supplies. In order to reduce the reliance on foreign sources, he said it is important to adopt policies that increase the amount of oil and natural gas produced domestically, while also pushing toward a shift to renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIncreasing the domestic areas of production and implementing more efficient renewable resources is not simply an economic issue; it is also a national security issue,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cBy producing more oil and natural gas in the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United   States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> and increasing our use of more efficient technologies such as wind and solar power, we will become less reliant on foreign countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Expect this debate to continue in the fall, even though the House bill has little chance of being signed by the president.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
