{"id":2108,"date":"2007-08-16T05:53:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-16T11:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/cruzado-salas-replaces-flores-at-nmsu\/"},"modified":"2007-08-16T05:53:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-16T11:53:00","slug":"cruzado-salas-replaces-flores-at-nmsu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/cruzado-salas-replaces-flores-at-nmsu\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruzado-Salas replaces Flores at NMSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsQ66oBJ5qI\/AAAAAAAADII\/nHqmDS0W7dg\/s1600-h\/Cruzado-Salas,+Waded.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsQ66oBJ5qI\/AAAAAAAADII\/nHqmDS0W7dg\/s200\/Cruzado-Salas,+Waded.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099265456939329186\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The dean of the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">College<\/st1:placetype>  of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Arts<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> and Sciences at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico State University<\/a> will take over as its executive vice president and provost on Sept. 1.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/%7Eucomm\/Releases\/2007\/august\/provost_nmsu.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Waded Cruzado-Salas<\/a> was named to the job on Wednesday by university President Michael Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear that any of the finalists could serve us well, but I\u2019m convinced Dr. Cruzado-Salas is exactly the right person for this team at this time in NMSU history,\u201d Martin said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cruzado-Salas was among three finalists Martin interviewed in recent weeks. She had been a finalist for the same position a year ago at the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Texas- Pan American<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, but withdrew her name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am honored, pleased and humbled to be able to serve the university in this capacity,\u201d she said. \u201cI will do my utmost to help President Martin achieve the goals he has set forth in his vision. At the same time, I will serve the faculty, staff and students at NMSU with the deepest devotion to academics and to their success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">During the search process, Cruzado-Salas stressed the need for better integration among the three roles of the land-grant mission \u2013 teaching, research and service \u2013 as well as the importance of higher education for elevating the quality of life for all New Mexicans. She also talked about the importance of fundraising, citing the establishment of the first three endowed chairs in the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">College<\/st1:placetype>  of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Arts<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> and Sciences during her four years as dean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have relished my role as dean of arts and sciences,\u201d she said, \u201cand I am sorry to say goodbye to that. But I am looking forward to serving the entire academic community and the community at large in this new undertaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Prior to coming to NMSU, Cruzado-Salas served four years as arts and sciences dean at the <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Puerto Rico<\/st1:placename> at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Mayaguez<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>. She earned a doctorate in humanities at the University of Texas-Arlington in 1990 and also earned her master\u2019s in Spanish there. She graduated magna cum laude from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Puerto Rico<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> in 1982 with a bachelor\u2019s in comparative literature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cruzado-Salas will be paid about $220,000 annually \u2013 the same as her predecessor Bill Flores, who recently left the job to become deputy secretary of higher education for the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Flores<\/st1:place> has a unique working situation \u2013 one that\u2019s under review by the state attorney general. He technically remains on staff at NMSU as an assistant to the provost assigned to work with the higher education department. The university is paying his entire $220,000 annual salary for the state, and he works and lives in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University will take over as its executive vice president and provost on Sept. 1.
