{"id":2096,"date":"2007-08-14T09:40:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-14T15:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/pearce-defends-record-on-combating-meth\/"},"modified":"2007-08-14T09:40:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-14T15:40:00","slug":"pearce-defends-record-on-combating-meth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/pearce-defends-record-on-combating-meth\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce defends record on combating meth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsHNBUuF4hI\/AAAAAAAADGw\/cI7c9CRigFY\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RsHNBUuF4hI\/AAAAAAAADGw\/cI7c9CRigFY\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098581675785708050\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., struck back Monday at those who have attacked his recent votes against bills that included funding to combat methamphetamine production and use by announcing two grants of $100,000 each for drug prevention in his district.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the news release, Pearce announced that he has secured $100,000 each for the <st1:city st=\"on\">Carlsbad<\/st1:City> anti-drug\/anti-gang collation and the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Lea<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> anti-drug coalition. He called meth a \u201cscourge that is rapidly infecting our neighborhoods around the country. The problem is particularly dangerous in our area, and this funding will help us continue to fight for the future of our young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The release doesn\u2019t say when the money was secured, but also announces that, to date, Pearce has secured \u201cwell over\u201d $1 million \u201cin federal funding for meth prevention, education and treatment efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The release also points out that Pearce sponsored last year a bill that would have created a national registry for convicted felony drug dealers similar to the sex-offender registry, and sponsored a bill this year that would provide funding to study the best ways to treat addicts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce also pointed out in the news release that he has \u201cheld dozens and dozens of town-hall meetings to try and let New Mexicans know the devastating consequences of methamphetamines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce was attacked last week by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a> for his recent vote against a bill that included $975,000 to help combat meth in rural <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> \u2013 money he helped get included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:h.r.03093:\" target=\"_blank\">Commerce and Justice and Science Appropriations bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He was also attacked last month by one of three Democrats vying for the right to take him on next year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, for voting against the <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:h.r.02419:\" target=\"_blank\">Farm Bill<\/a>, which included $15 million to encourage farmers to use fertilizers that don\u2019t contain ammonia. A component of meth, ammonia is often stored in large tanks on farms and stolen by meth producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said at the time that he voted against the bill because the good provisions in it were \u201ccombined with fiscally irresponsible tax hikes that would damage the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> economy, put people out of work and reduce our ability to become energy independent.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
