{"id":2084,"date":"2007-08-09T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-09T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/democrats-assail-pearce-wilson\/"},"modified":"2007-08-09T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-09T20:00:00","slug":"democrats-assail-pearce-wilson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/democrats-assail-pearce-wilson\/","title":{"rendered":"Democrats assail Pearce, Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, both New Mexico Republicans, are under fire today from Democratic groups.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RrtyuUuF4VI\/AAAAAAAADFM\/0aEkekM_a7c\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RrtyuUuF4VI\/AAAAAAAADFM\/0aEkekM_a7c\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096793543461429586\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Pearce, who is in <st1:city st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:city> today holding a town-hall meeting about combating the use of methamphetamine, voted in July against a bill that included $975,000 to help combat meth in rural <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> \u2013 money he helped get included in the bill, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a> pointed out in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The funds were part of the larger <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:h.r.03093:\" target=\"_blank\">Commerce and Justice and Science Appropriations bill<\/a> that passed the House and has been referred to the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cRep. Pearce voted against state and local law enforcement\u2019s battle against meth \u2013 pure and simple,\u201d said state Democratic Party chair Brian Col\u00f3n in the release. \u201cWhile Pearce may talk the talk about fighting meth, he doesn\u2019t walk the walk. We need a representative in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state> who puts what <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> needs to fight the meth epidemic before his loyalty to President Bush and the Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The money for the anti-meth program, according to the Democratic Party, was requested by all three of the state\u2019s representatives in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> also voted against the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s the second time in recent weeks that Pearce has voted against a bill that included funding to combat the spread of meth in New <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. He voted against the <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:h.r.02419:\" target=\"_blank\">Farm Bill<\/a> last month, though it included $15 million to encourage farmers to use fertilizers that don\u2019t contain ammonia. A component of meth, ammonia is often stored in large tanks on farms and stolen by meth producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said at the time that he voted against the bill because it \u201cenacts enormous tax increases and will cost New Mexicans thousands of jobs.\u201d He said the good provisions in the bill are \u201ccombined with fiscally irresponsible tax hikes that would damage the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> economy, put people out of work and reduce our ability to become energy independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It wasn\u2019t just state Democrats who had their eyes on the newest vote. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee<\/a> called me today to make sure I was aware of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RrtyokuF4UI\/AAAAAAAADFE\/jvrJ_IRU0mk\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RrtyokuF4UI\/AAAAAAAADFE\/jvrJ_IRU0mk\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096793444677181762\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Speaking of the DCCC, the fundraising arm of House Democrats began airing a radio ad in the <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> area today attacking <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> for \u201cher continued lockstep support of President Bush\u2019s failed <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> policy,\u201d according to a news release. The ad calls on <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> to support \u201ca new direction in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can listen to the ad by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/audio\/august07radioad.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. It follows television ads the DCCC ran in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and other markets last week highlighting the accomplishments of the Democrats this year. Fernando Cuevas, a spokesman for the DCCC, said the current campaign, designed to pressure more Republicans to quit supporting Bush\u2019s <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> policy, will continue through the end of August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The radio ads are running in the districts of 12 congressional Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce and Wilson are both up for re-election next year.
