Isaac Chavez, who unsuccessfully challenged state Rep. Andy Nu\u00f1ez last year, has said <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/chavez-leaning-toward-running-for-city.html\">he\u2019s likely running<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The municipal judgeship held by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/municourt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Miller-Byrnes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Candidates must file formal declarations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the city clerk\u2019s office, located on the basement level of City Hall, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&amp;geocode=&#038;q=200+n+church+street,+las+cruces,+nm&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&#038;sspn=45.822921,64.775391&amp;amp;amp;ie=UTF8&#038;z=16&amp;iwloc=addr&amp;om=1\" target=\"_blank\">200 N. Church Street<\/a>. Voter registration for the city election ends at 5 p.m. on Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Absentee ballots can be requested beginning Oct. 10, and in-person absentee voting at the clerk\u2019s office begins Oct. 17. All absentee voting ends on Nov. 3. Hours for absentee voting will be Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On three Saturdays \u2013 Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 \u2013 absentee voting will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Polls will be open on the first Tuesday in November from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Each seat up for grabs has a four-year term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The biggest issue in the election will be the city\u2019s rapid growth. Approval in April of the gross receipts tax increase to help fund <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/Spaceport%20America\">Spaceport America<\/a> and in May of the annexation and master plan for <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/The%20Vistas%20at%20Presidio\">The Vistas at Presidio<\/a>, a massive development on the <st1:place st=\"on\">East  Mesa<\/st1:place>, has galvanized citizens who think growth is out of control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The biggest question yet to be answered is whether Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/las-cruces.org\/council\/district6.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a>, who ran unsuccessfully against Mattiace in 2003, will try again. Miyagishima\u2019s last public comment was that he hasn\u2019t made a decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His current term runs until 2009, so he has nothing to lose by running for mayor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Las Cruces city councilors approved this week a resolution formalizing the date and other details of the upcoming Nov. 6 municipal election.
