{"id":20615,"date":"2010-08-18T14:09:21","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T20:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=20615"},"modified":"2010-08-18T23:47:38","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T05:47:38","slug":"pearce-challenges-teague-to-10-debates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/08\/pearce-challenges-teague-to-10-debates\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce challenges Teague to 10 debates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8567\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8567\" title=\"Teague Pearce\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Teague-Pearce-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Teague-Pearce-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Teague-Pearce.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Pearce, left, and Harry Teague (Photos by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\">Steve Pearce<\/a> today challenged the incumbent member of Congress he\u2019s trying to unseat, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\">Harry Teague<\/a>, to 10 \u201ctown-hall style\u201d debates across the 2nd Congressional District before the Nov. 2 election.<\/p>\n<p>Teague\u2019s spokeswoman said a response would be coming.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce said in a news release that the two should take part in the 10 debates in at least eight counties, \u201cin addition to the traditional media-sponsored debates already proposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently the campaigns are negotiating with media outlets to conduct two or three formal debates during the last two months of the campaign, Pearce\u2019s release states, adding that Pearce has agreed to appear with and debate Teague at any time during the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of our district have the right to see their candidates in a side-by-side setting to find out exactly where both of us stand on the issues,\u201d Pearce said. \u201cTen debates in eight different counties would give the people of Southern New Mexico multiple opportunities to ask the candidates various questions and make an informed decision.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 3:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/10\/pearce-richardson-debate-ducking-continues\/\">hammered Pearce<\/a> for ducking debates in 2006, and the state Democratic Party seized on the same theme to hit Pearce today:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout his career, Congressman Steve Pearce has never been a fan of debates\u2026 until now,\u201d a news release from the party states. \u201cIn 2004 he refused one debate and never showed up for a second \u2013 and in 2006 KOB TV was forced to air New Mexico\u2019s \u2018One Man Debate\u2019 because Congressman Pearce decided not to show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere he goes again doing the Washington Waffle \u2013 yesterday it was the Constitution, and today it\u2019s debates,\u201d Democratic Party of New Mexico spokesman James Hallinan said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 4:15 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teague Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello said \u201cthere will be debates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will work on details and we look forward to comparing records, but the real news is that Congressman Pearce\u2019s debate dodging days are possibly over and he might finally answer some tough questions \u2013 like why he voted against, but then happily pocketed every pay raise Congress gave itself during his six years in Washington,\u201d Gabello said.<\/p>\n<p>He also asked, since Pearce wants debates in eight counties, which of the district\u2019s 18 counties Pearce thinks should be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>And Gabello said this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHarry hasn\u2019t been sitting around waiting for the campaign season to kick off before he starts talking to people. In the last 20 months Harry has been hard at work visiting all 18 counties in the 2nd\u00a0district multiple times and hosting well over 100 public forums.\u00a0He has made it his top priority to stay in touch with the people and communities he represents so they know where he stands on the issues and so he can be responsive to their needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Harry\u2019s hard work, his willingness to talk about the issues, and his commitment to staying in touch, Dion Kidd, a resident of Alamogordo, recently said, \u2018Harry is the hardest working, most accessible and responsive Representative this district has seen since Joe Skeen.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Republican Steve Pearce has challenged Democrat Harry Teague to 10 \u201ctown-hall style\u201d debates across the 2nd Congressional District.
